Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that zenof the United mento, in 'the county of Sacramento, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it a-ppertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.

This invention relates to improvements in railway rolling stock, and particularly to car couplers for day coaches and Pullman ears, the object of the invention being to produce a coupler which can be opened from both sides of the car, vthus obviating the necessity of the operator passing across from one side of the car to the other and between two cars about to come together which often results in his being killed or injured.

A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.

These objects I accomplish by means of such structure parts will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.

Referring characters of reference on the drawings, l designates a day coach coupler which is of the ordinary type, and hence no description of the internal mechanism is herein entered into. i

From the foregoing description it' will readily appear that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.

Having thus described, my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A car coupler comprising a coupler proper having an opening lever lying horizontally with respect to said coupler, a rod flexibly connected with the outer end of said lever and projecting beyond one sideof the coupler, a bolt secured transversely through a yoke on said bolt, a V-shaped lever mounted in said yoke and lying tra-nsversely with respect to said opening lever, a chain connected from thelower end of said V-shaped lever to the outer end of said opening lever and a rod projecting `from the upper end of said-Vehaped lever tothe side of said couplerppposite that sido to which said first named rod projects as described.
