. To all whom it-may concern:
Be. it known that I, THEODORE Hrnsnn'r, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Roselle, in the county of Union and State .of New Jersey, have, invented certain.new
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for rotat-ively supporting, the make and break devices with respect to i the magneto and to permitready removal and replacement of said devices when re-- quired. i A further object is to provide certain 1mprovements in parts of the circuit of the magneto. My invention comprises novel. details oi .improvement and combinations of parts that will be more fullyhereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims;
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein, Figure 1 is a-front view of a portion ota magneto illustrating my improvements in operating position; Fig. 2 is a similar View illustrating the manner of adjusting the parts for removal of the make and break devices; Fig. 3 is a front view of parts, the make and break devices of Figs. 1 and 2 being removed; Fig. is a section onv the line 4, 4, in Fig. 1 showing the protecting cap,
and Fig. 5 is a section substantially on the line 5, 5, in Fig. 1'.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a front support or plate of a magneto, (main parts of. the magneto not being illustrated as 'i'ormingno substantial part, of my pres ent improvements), and at 2 is an insulating ring or pla'temounted to rotate or rock upon support 1. To this end I av i wn support 1 provided with l re-- carving a corresponding'cen disposed opening of insulating plate 2 (see Fig. 4%), whereby said plate is-reniovably su ported to rotate or rock uponsaid hub. .i uh I is shown provided with an opening 1 receiving shaft 3 of the magneto such as its armature, having actuating'cam 'arranged in any well known manntin-QFlate. 2is shown provided with projections 2? either or both of which may be utilised"ferrockmgsmd plate, as by being connected'with any suitable controlling device in any well known or desired manner. At 5 are guides or latches carried by plate 1 and adapted to coact with projections 2 to rotatably retain plate 2 in operating position upon hub l. The guides or latches 5 are shown movably supported upon plate 1 by screws or pivots .6, and held in set position by screws 7 threaded into plate 1, for convenience latches :cesses 5 to receive screws 7. In the normal positions of the parts projections 2 play be tween plate land guides 5, and said guides are of sufiicient length to permit plate 2 to have the required rocking motion while retained in position by said guides. Yet plate 2 may beturned'so far in one direction or the other as to enable one ofthe projections 2 to pass beyond the adjacent guide 5 (see Fig. 2). To remove or apply plate 2 the same is turned sufliciently farin one direction toenable one of. the guides 5 to be of guides 5 being shown provided with re J drawn outwardly away from the corresponding projection 2 and then plate 2 is turned in the reverse direction sutliciently far to carry the other projection 2 beyond the free end of the corresponding guide 5, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby plate 2 may be removed from hub '1 and again replaced thereon. When so replaced plate 2 will next be turned to carryits projection 2 suificiently high to enable the corresponding guide 5 to be swung over and locked in the position shown in Fig. 1, and then the projections 2 -of said plate may again play in the normal operating position with respect to guides 5 as illustrated in Fig. 1.
Plate 2 is shown carrying the make and break. rockers 8pivotally supported upon pins 9 projecting fromfbases 9 secured on plate 2, and rockers 8 being adapted to coact with contacts 10 of posts 11 carried on said plate to make and break the armature circuit, said rockers being operated bycam a, In the illustration shown, the contacts 10 through their posts 11 are connected by wires 12 (carried along the back of plate 2) with contact 13' secured on the back of plate 2, and the rockersS are respectively in circuit with plates 14:01]. the back of plate 2 by wires passing through said plate. -This particular arrangement of contacts of the make and break circuit are not broadly claimed herein as they are embraced in my application vitor improvements in ignition devices filed March 23, 1909, Serial No. 485,252, my present improven'ients relating to improved means for supportig and insulating certain contacts in the circuit of the plates 13 and 1.4-. To this end I provide an insulating plate 15 having contacts or springs 16 laid against said insulator, the upper ends of said contacts being shown bent over the end of insulator 1.5, screws or rivets 17 passin through said contacts 16 and insulation 1 and through plate 1 serving to secure said insulation and contacts to said plate. ()n the inner face of plate 1 are substantially St3lill(llClll2ll' contacts 18 mounted upon insulation 19 on plate 1, and
. separated or insulated from each other, the
screws or rivets 17 connecting with contacts 18 respectively, whereby the parts 15, 16, 1'7 and 18 are all mechanically and electricallyunited. Springs or contacts 20, 20 (suitably supported on the magneto) bear upon the contacts 16 and form part or the primary circuit of the magneto armature, and plates 14. play upon and in contact with springs 20, 20. Another spring or contact 21, supported by the magneto, is substantially parallel with contacts Q0, 20 and is in engagement with contact 13, serving as a common return. The arrangement'is such that contacts 14. remain in engagement with contacts 20, and contact 13 remains in engagement with contact 21, when plate 2 is rocked, and the insulation 15, which may have a spring tendency toward contacts 20, 20, serves to maintain the latter in circuit with contacts 1G. The contacts 20, 90 are to be included in the line of circuits of the primary of the arn'iature' of the magneto and contacts 18 are maintained respectively in said circuit.
A protecting cap or shell 22 is shown carried by plate 2 and rcmovably attached. thereto by posts 2 3 extending from said plate. Said cap carries a binding post 24- in circuit witl shaft 23 by any suitable means, such as brushes 21-.
Other parts ot the circuits are not herein shown as they may he arranged in any Wellknown manner or as set forth in my application Serial No. 485,252 aforesaid.
While I have shown both guides 5 as adapted to he swung relatively to plateQ, it will he understood that but one of said guides need be n'iovable, as the other guide 5 can he permanently secured or attached to the plate 1, and other changes may be. made iii the details 0t construction set forth, Within the scope of the appended claims, Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having now described my invention what I claim is 2- 1. The combination of. a support, a plate mounted to rotate thereon, make and break contacts carried by said plate. and guides to movably retain said plate upon said support, one of said guides being movably attached to the support to permit removal of said plate "from said support.
2. The coml'iination of a. support, an insulating plate relatively mounted thereon, and provided with make and break contacts, said plate having projections, guides carried by said support to enact with said projections, and means to permit. movement of one of said guides for releasing said pro ject-ions from said guides.
' 3. The combination of a. support, an insulating plate rotatively mounted thereon and provided with make and bro: k contacts, said plate having projections, and guides carried by said support to coact. with said projections, one of said guides being movably connected with said support.
1. The combination of a support, an insulating plate rotativcly mounted upon said support and provided with make and break contacts, said plate having projections on opposite sides, guides carried by said sup port on opposite sides to coact with said projections, one of said guides being movably carried by said support, and means to hold said guide firmly in normal position.
5. TheCOll'lbllltltlOll of a support, a plate rotativcly mounted thereon and provided with make and break contacts, said plate having projections on opposite sides, guides carried by said platoon opposite sides and projecting in the same direction to coact with said projections, one of said guides being n'iovably supported atits lower end to release the corresponding projection, and means to hold said guide in normal set position.
