DYNAMO FOR TRAIN-LIGHTING.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J .urns F. MoELRoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dynamos for Train-Lighting, of which the following is a specification describing that form of my invention which I now regard as the best form out of the various forms in which it may be embodied.
Reference is made to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan of the machine. Figs. 2 and 3 show details of the reversing apparatus.
My invention involves certain improvements in the construction and arrangement of dynamo-electric machines, with particular reference to the mounting of the same upon the truck of a railway-vehicle, so as tobe driven by one of the axles to supply electricity for lighting and other purposes upon the car or upon the train of which the car forms a part.
I have devised a certain novel way of mounting the automatic switch devices in connection with the rest of the d ynamo-machine in order that the whole may form a unitary structure.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents a dynamo-electric machine inclosed, as usual, by an iron casing formed by an extension of the neutral portion of the field-magnet structure into a box form, within which is mounted the armature of the machine and outside of the armature the holdmagnet coils and polepieces. No novelty is claimed for this general construction, so it need not be described in detail. I have, however, added at the rear end of the machine, opposite to the commutator end, an extension B, which is made hollow. so as to contain the journal-bearings, and also, in a separate com partment, the 1"eversingswitch that controls the direction of current-flow. Fig. 3 shows the lower half of the extension B, the upper half thereof being formed integral with the upper half of the main casing of the machine, so as to be movable therewith in a manner to be hereinafter described. A cover B is also provided, which has suitable hinges and a latch B Referring to Fig. 3, O is the armature-shaft, extending through journal-box D, which rests in the partition-wall E of the extension B. On the extremity of the shaft C is a disk F, provided with a flange F, projecting from the periphery of the disk on the side away from the machine itself. Opposite the disk F are placed two disks F and F, the former being attached to the outer end of a pivotingstud F, set in a socket projecting from the center of a circular plate G, which sets into and covers over an opening in the wall of the casing and is held therein by a latch Gr. The disk F is stationary, being carried by the projecting socket aforesaid, while the disk F is free to turn to a limited extent by the rotation of the stud F in its socket.
As appears in Fig. 2, the stationary disk F is provided with a curved slot f, through which projects a pin H, secured at its base to the disk F and serving to limit by its engagement with the ends of the slot the rotation of said disk I. The pin H also passes through an eye on one end of the spring-le ver J.
On the inside of the flange F of the disk F is pivoted a pawl K, the tip of which bears upon the periphery of both disks F and F. The pawl is pivoted at the point X: and is normally pressed downward against the disks by the spring Zt. On the periphery of the disk F is a notch L, while the upper half of the disk F is shaped on a curve having a somewhat shorter radius than the rest of the disk, the reduction from the larger and normal radius of the lower part to the smaller radius of the upper part being made gradually, so that the disk has the effect of a cam to lift the tip of pawl K out of the notch L when the notch comes opposite either extremity of the reduced portion aforesaid of the disk F.

lating-block I, secured to the walls of the casing, and between them is pivoted the switch-plate O. In like manner the terminals 3 and 4t and the switch-blade O are attached to the under side of the insulatingblock P. The two switch-plates are operated simultaneously by the spring-arm J, through the intervention of an insulating-block R, which is pivotally connected, as shown in Fig. 4, to both of the switch-plates O and O.
The operation of the devices described is as follows: Assuming that the armature-shaft starts to rotate, for instance, in a clockwise direction, when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2 it will carry with it the disk F and the pawl K, pivoted thereto, within the flange F. The tip or hook of the pawl will slide around-the periphery of the disks F and F until it is permitted by the reduced portion of disk F to drop into the notch L, whereupon it catches the disk F and turns it until the notch L comes opposite the succeeding cam-surface of the disk F which will lift the pawl K out of the notch L and will thereafter ride freely on the peripheries of both disks. The movement of the disk F has carried with it the pin H and the lever J, which in turn draws on the switch-plates O and O, and thereby throws the switch to the proper position corresponding to the clockwise direction of rotation of the shaft C. If the dynamo starts up again in the opposite direc tion, the pawl K will in like manner take into the notch L and throw back the disk F into the position shown in Fig. 2. It will be observed that the switch M, which is thus operated by the movement of the dynamo in one direction or the other, is contained within a separate inclosure within the projection B,
extending out from the main casing of the machine.
This application is a division of my application, Serial No. 110,4J3, filed June 6, 1902.
The particular construction of the switchoperating mechanism is not herein claimed, as it is made the subject of my Patent No.
l 1 l l l l l l M y purpose in the present application is to claim the construction and mounting of the switch and switch-operating mechanism with relation to the rest of the dynamo, whereby these devices are separated from the armature and other parts and yet the whole forms a unitary structure.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a field-magnet, of a casing forming the yoke of said magnet and inclosing the machine, a partition in said casing surrounding the dynamo-shaft, an armature on said shaft on one side of the partition, an automatic switch on the opposite side of said partition, and operating devices controlled by the shaft and controlling said switch.
2. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a field-magnet, of a casingforming the yoke of said magnet and inclosing the machine, a partition in said casing surrounding the dynamo-shaft, a bearing for the shaft in said partition, an armature on said shaft on one side of the partition, an automatic switch on the opposite side of said 1')artition, and operating devices controlled by the shaft and controlling said switch.
3. In a dynamo-electric machine, the com bination with a field-magnet, of a casing forming the yoke of said magnet and inclosing the machine, a partition in said casing pierced by the dynamo-shaft, an armature on said shaft on one side of the partition, an automatic switch on the opposite side of said partition, and operating devices mounted on the shaft on the same side of the partition as the switch and controlled by the shaft but eontiolling the said switch.
