AP1LIGATION FILED JULY 24, 1912.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI OE.
HENRY E. HALL, OF ELYRIA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE THOMAS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF DAY TON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
DOOR-SEGUBER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14,1913.
Application filed July 24, 1912. Serial No. 711.240.
To all 'urlwm it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY E. IIALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to door securers, and more particularly to those which, for particnlar positions, are adapted to permit the door to be partially open to permit communication between the parties on the two sides of the door without permitting the door to be opened.
My device finds uses, for example, when it is desired to leave a door partially open for ventilating purposes or for permitting the inmates of the house to communicate with tradesmen, etc. on the outside without running the risk of burglars, thieves, etc. entering the house.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient effective means for accomplishing this.
The particular objects of my invention, the invention itself and the details of the embodiment illustrated in the drawing will be better understood from a description of that embodiment.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a member which I call the stay plate. Fig. 2 is a plan of the member which I call the arm. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the arm. Fig. 4 is a cross section of the arm. Fig. 5 is a side view of the plate. Fig. 6 is a plan of my device for a door.
Referring now to the drawing and to the embodiments illustrated therein, at 7 I show the stay plate which is provided with an opening 8. The edges of the plate along the sides of the opening are provided with a plurality of teeth 9 which may be of any number desired and which are oppositely disposed for the purpose to be described. A hook 10 is provided upon one end of the plate, being preferably integral therewith.
This hook is adapted to fit into the bolt slot in the door jamb and may catch in the bolt slot plate where such is provided, as shown at 11 in Fig. 6. Lips 12 are provided upon this hook. In the form shown they are integral with the hook and upon the opposite ends thereof. These lips drop in behind the end of the bolt slot plate when the stay plate is mounted as shown in Fig. 6, or otherwise engage the walls of the bolt slot to secure the stay plate in position. For example, the bottom of the slot may be cut away to admit the entrance of the lip. The other end of the stay plate may be perforated as shown at 13 and one end of a chain or cord 14 connected therein. The other end of the cord is connected into a hole v 15 in the arm 16. In the form shown, this arm consists of a channel-shaped member having a bottom 17 and sides 18.
I prefer to'increase the depth of the sides and narrow the width of the bottom as I approach one end. This is illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 where the bottom at 20 is narrower than at 21, but the sides at 22 are deeper than at 21 and 23. By shaping the arm this way, I find it is easier to insert the end 23 in the opening, whereas the end 22 is adapted to stand a greater force against it, thus making it practically impossible to open the door when the securer is fastened therein. hen it is desired to secure a door, the stay plate 7 is mounted as shown with the hook 10 inserted in the bolt slot or other convenient part of the door jamb. The arm 21 is then inserted into the opening with its edges 25 engaging the upper edges 26 of the oppositely disposed teeth 9. One end of the arm then engages the door and the other the jamb, making it impossible to open the door without tearing out' the side of the jamb.
By mounting the arm with its edges engaging one side or the other of the oppositely disposed teeth, the amount of play permitted to the door may be regulated, thus allowing it to be opened to a greater or less extent. I prefer to provide the arm with buffers 27 which engage the door and jamb to prevent the scarring of the same.
While I have shown this particular embodiment of my invention for the purpose of clearly illustrating the invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the spirit of the invention is not limited to the details of the embodiment illustrated.
Numerous and extensive departures may be made from details Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The scope of the invention is illustrated in the appended claims.
I claim 17 In a door securer, the combination of a stay plate having an opening therein, the sides of the opening being provided with teeth arranged opposite each other, a. hook provided upon one end. of the plate having overhanging lips on its end and a fastening arm of channel shape adapted to pass through the opening in the stay plate, its edges en aging opposite teeth in the sides of the opening, one end of the arm adapted to engage the door and the other the door jamb.
2. In a door securer, the combination of a .tay plate having an opening therein, a hook provided upon one end of the plate adapted to catch in the bolt slot in the door jamb, a fastening arm adapted to be in serted in said opening, one end of the arm engaging the door and the other the door jamb, and 1 ns on the sides of the open ing to eng 4 said arm, said arm being channelshaped and the channel increasing in depth and narrowing in Width of its bottom from one of its ends to the other.
In a door seourer, the combination with a stay plate having an opening therein and a hook on one end thereof, said hook adapted to enter a slot in the door jamb, and a channel-shaped arm adapted to project through the opening in the plate and engage the door on one side of the plate and the jamb on the other.
4. In a door securer, the combination of a stay plate, having an opening therein, an arm adapted to project through the opening in the stay plate to secure a door, said arm being channel shaped and increasing in depth and lessening in bottom Width from one of its ends to the other.
5. In a door securer, the combination with a stay plate having an opening therein and a hook on one end thereof, said, hook adapted to enter the bolt slot in the door jamb and being provided with lips which are adapted to drop behind the bolt slot plate and a channel shaped arm adapted to projeet through the opening and engage the door on one side of the plate and the jamb on the other.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signa ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
HALL.
