Description

G. F; PAUL.
SAFETY RAZOR.
APPLICATION FILED DEG. 11, 1911.
I Patented Jan 7, 1913.
INVEII'TOR 660/36 riff x! I WITNESSES QM /m ATTORNEYS GEORGE E. PAUL, OF NEW'YORK; N. Y.
SAFETY-RAZOR.
Spptification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 7,1913.
Application filed December 11, 1911. Serial No. 664,951.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. PAUL, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resldent of the city of New York, borough of -Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new, and Improved Safety-Razor, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to arazor, and more particularly relates to a safety razor, and has for anobject to construct a safety razor in which a thin rigid blade may be adjustably positioned relative to a flexible guard, to dispose the blade at different distances from the guard according to the requirements of the user. 7
With the above and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in Which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a preferred embodiment of my invention, the upper portion ,being cut away centrally, to show certain portions in section and showing the position of the parts before the blade is clamped into position. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the blade fully clamped into position. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the reinforced blade in position, viewed from the under side of the same, as
shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and Fig. 4 is a plan view looking down upon the flexible guard plate shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In Figs. 1 and 2, I have shown a handle 5, of any suitable construction, the upper end of which has a centrally disposed screwthreaded bore 6, which bored end is reduced to form a square-head projection 7 and an angular shoulder 8. Adapted to rest on the shoulder 8 and surrounding the projection 7, is a flexible metallic guard plate 9, rec tangular in plan, as shown in Fig. 4, having a central aperture 10, into which is inserted the projection 7 Two opposite sides of the guard plate 9 are bent upward and outward, as shown at 11,-and the-extreme outer end of said guard is curved downward, as shown at 12, to form a guard edge, retreating from the cutting edge of the blade.
Rigidly extending upward from the flat,
-central 'portion 13 of the guard 9 and spaced equi-distant from the aperture 10,
are a plurality of posts 14, in Fig. 4, shown V to be four in number, and arranged at the corners of a rectangle. These posts 14 are of a height equal tothenormal distance between the flat portion 13 and the bearing point 15, adjacent the downward curved edge 12. 1 Adapted to rest upon the posts 14, is a blade 16, which blade, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3, is a. plate rectangular in plan, all of the edges of which are sharpened to a cutting edge 17 The under side of the blade 16 has diagonally extending reinforcing and integrally connected downward projections 18 of -material thickness ad acent the center ofthe blade, and of re-- duced thickness toward the outer edge, said projections or reinforcements 18 terminating adjacent the corners of the blade, and resting upon the diagonally-disposed pins 14. A square opening 19 extends through the center of the'blade 16 and through the I reinforcements 18. A rectangular cap plate '20 is disposed on top of the blade 16, the
lateral edges of which terminate within the cutting edge 17 of the blade and within the bearing point 15, of the guard 9. In order to hold the, cap plate 20 and blade 16 in position on the ground 9, a binding post 21 passes through said cap plate 20, and through the square opening 19 in the blade 16, and has a threaded shank 22 engaging within the bore ,6. The outer end of the post 21 has a square head 23 fitting the aperture 19,'to prevent the blade from rotat-.
ing on the same. The handle 5 is, in efiect,
screwed on to the post by rotating the same 5 through the manipulation of a milledhead 24. I It will be noted that the blade 16 and the cap plate 20 are disposed on the guard as shown in Fig. 1, with the binding post 21 1 engaging the bore 6. Then by rotating the handle 6, the pressure transmitted through the rigid blade reinforcements 18 and pins 14, bears down on the guardplate 9, causing the guard plate to be held centrally-by the shoulder 8 and depressed by the pins 14, and the free end of the guard plate, to recede from the cutting edge of the blade,
so that in effect, the rotation of the handle 5 will move the guard and blade in positions at varying distances from each other, thereby regulating-thecloseness of the shave.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 7
1. A rectangular safety razor blade llflV-' ing reinforcing projections integral with and extending therefrom, said projections extending in the direction of diagonal :corners, said projections thinning toward their outer edges and terminating a material-distance from said corners.
2. In a safety razor, a handle having a reduced end to form a shoulder, a resilient guard plate resting on said'shoulder, opposite sides of said guard plate being bent upwardly and outwardly away from said shoulder, pins carried by said guard in spaced relation from said shoulder, a blade,v
normally resting on said upturned portions of said guard and on said pins, a binding inm te post bearing on said blade and in screwthreaded engagement with the reduced portion of said handle, whereby the rotation of said handle will press said blade toward said shoulder, to flextheputer free bent ends of said guard away from said blade.
3; A safety razor blade comprising a rectangular plate having reinforcing projections extending from one face thereof and integral therewith,-said projections extending in the direction of diagonal corners.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
