PAINT-PACKAGE.
Specification bf Letters Patent;
Patented J an. 7, 1913.
Application filed April 12, 1912. Serial No. 690,372.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WV, IIASBURG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Paint-Packages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in paint packages, and has especial reference to packages designed to contain gold paint for ceramic decoration. acter is of a mastic nature and-in its preparation for use it isusually deposited upon a glass palette and inelosed by a substantially transparent cover, such as a sheet of celluloid, or the like, overlying the palette and then substantially hermetically sealed in the package to exclude dust and other objectionablc matter. The. paint deposit is invariably of a dark brown or chocolate color, as it appears to the purchaser, but when applied and after the article to which the paint has been so applied has been burned or tired, it changes color materially, having the metallic color and appearance of gold, such as, known in the art as Roman; green; white; and ruby gold, or green; red; brown; ray and verdigris bronze.
The only means that the purchaser has heretofore had for determining the resultant color or character of gold resulting from the use of a deposit in a given package is the statement of the manufacturer upon the package. To contemplative purchasers, unfamiliar with the various colors and characteristics of the product of several manufac-, turers, the mere statement of color is not always satisfactory. I therefore find that an ocular demonstration of these features of the product, accompanying the package, affords a ready means for determining the results that may be expected fromthe use of the paint after it has been applied to an article, for decorative purposes and said article has been put through the usual process of firing. With these objects in view I provide a surface, in connection with the usual brown deposit of paint, which has been previously prepared to simulate the color of the product in its finished state.
Paint of this char-- In the drawing; Figure 1 is a. cross sect-ion of a typical gold paint package as it appears in a box for shipment. Fig. 2 is a plan view 5 is the usual glass palette with the brown colored gold paint deposit 6 near its middle zone, inclosed by a substantially transparent celluloid cover 7, that is preferably sealed to the palette, as at 8, in any desirable man nor, to render the package substantially air and dust tight. This constitutes the usual package, as heretofore prepared for the market. For shipment it may be placed in a box. 5) having a suitable lid or closure 10.
My invention consists in preparing a surface, associated with. the package, which has previously been prepared to simulate the color of the paint, as it will appear after application to and firing of the article to which it has been applied.
In the specific embodiment illustrated, 11 is a sheet of paper having its uppermost'surface prepared, by suitable means, to simulate t-hecolor and appearance of the accompanying paint after application to, and completion of, ceramic articles to which it may be applied. The paper may be pasted to the back of the glass palette 5, or to the bottom of the containing box 9, or the respective surfaces of the palette, or the box may be directly treated to produce the desired effect. It is preferable to presentsuch prepared surface so that it may become visi- .ble from the front or through the openingin the containing box 9, so that it may be 1nspeeted through the substantially transparent palette and cover and without remov ng the package from the box, but my invention is not limited to such an arrangement and in this respect it is susceptible to a number of variations and modifications.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
A ceramic gold paint package, comprising, a receptacle having bottom member, and a substantially transparent top member hermetically sealed thereto, a transparent palette, a deposit of ceramic gold paint smaller than the palette, carried by the top surface l within the receptacle and thereby protected of the palette, and an imitative surface prei against exterior influences. 10
pared to simulate that changed appearance In testimony whereof I hereunto set my which the gold paint will assume after bakhand 1n the presence of two Witnesses.
