Description
dented tant @tutti @91Min,
LOUIS LEHMAN, OF BUFFALO, ASSIGNOR TO DANIEL W..FISH, OF BROOK- QLYN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 104,966, dated July 5, 1870.
IMPRCVEMENT IN SPIKE-IIXTRACTOR...
Tih; Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same I, Louis LEHMAN, of the city of Buffalo, county ot' Erie and State of New York, have invented a new z and improved Spike-Puller, of which the following is a specification. j
My improved instrument consists of a pry-bar, provided with the usual claw at the end, with which is combined an arrangement of levers by which the spike, after it has been loosened by prying in the ordinary manner, is drawn vertically upward without bending the sume.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure I is a view of my improved implement represented in the irst act of loosening a spike by prymg.
Figure II is a view ofthe samein the position it is just as the spike is drawn.
Figure III is a view showing -the manner of using the instrument when a second prying movement becomes necessary.
Figure IV is a front sectional vie\v.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in each of the iigures.
A is the main bar', with the lower end curved, and provided with claws in the usual manner.
B is a bent lever, pivoted to the upper side of the har, near its lower end. I
O is a fulcrum-post, forked so as -topassastride of the bar A, and pivoted at its upper 'end to the short arm of the lever B, with its lower end widened, so as to form a suitable base or support as it rests on the ground.
D is an arm, pivotedat one end tothe long arm of the lever B, and united at the other with a similar arm, D', which is hinged to the bar A near its upper end, forming a toggle-joint.
E isa lever, hinged at'one end to the lever A, nearits center', and- F is a link connecting the toggle-joint and this iever, all as clearly represented in the drawing.
:In drawing spikes with my improved instrument,
"the claw is engaged with the head of the spike, and 'the latter pried loose in the usual manner, as shown l .In some cases the spike may be so firmly wedged inl the tie or other timber that it is ditcult to elevate it bythe movement just described, after a single pry with the bar A. In such case, the end of the bar is raised, so as to bring the notches c, which are formed in the edges of the forks of the post, in engagement with pins or spurs a, which project from the sides oi' the bar A when the locked post forms a, second and higher fulcrum, that enables another prying movenient to be made with the bar, which snfcientlyloosf ens the spike to enable its further withdrawal to be.
readily accomplished by the auxiliary lever, as above described.
Tile arrangement of thelever E and toggle-joint enables the lever B to be more conveniently operated and the power to be applied with greater eciency, than by taking hold of the latter lever directly.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination, with the bar iA, ofthe lever B and fulcru'm-post O, substantially as and for the 'pur pose hereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination and arrangement of the jointed bars D D', lever E, and connecting-arm F, with the bent lever B, post C, and bar A, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
3. The arrangement, with the barA and post C, and bent lever B, of the pins a and notches c, as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
LOUIS LEHMAN.
