fliww ulNirED sTAtrns PATENT OFFICE.
- rarnnmcn GHRISTiANSEN, or KIELGIERMAN'Y.
- LIFE-BELT;-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRInDRIoHCHRIs'rIAN- SEN, a subject of the Kin .of Prussia, and resident of No. 20 Eckernforder Alle, Kiel, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Improved Life-Belt, of-
which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved marine life-saving device" in the shape of a life-belt, the float of which carries an oil reservoir set in action when the device enters the water, so that the waves around the device are suppressed. The life belt thus floating on calmed water aflords to .the person or persons using the same an efvficlent protection against the dangerous force of the waves. Apart from this advantage, the oil-issuing life-belts thrown out for life-saving purposes are easier located both by the persons to be saved and bythe crew attempting therescue from the ship or boat.
Special objects of the invention are to render more eflicient, serviceable and durable in operation devices of the kind referred to.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the novel combination, arrangement and adaptation of parts all as more fully hereinafter explained, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically set out in the appended claims. v
In the drawing Figure 1 shows the lifeboat, provided with an oilreservoir according to this invention, hung up at the railing.
Fig. 2 shows the oil reservoir apart from the life-belt. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line AB of Fig. 2.
Thelife-belt consists essentially of a float o rendered buoyant in any suitable known manner and provlded at 1ts circumference withropes b or other equivalent, means to facilitate grasping. Inside the float a, in a chamber provided therein, an oil reservoir 0 is arranged. This oil reservoir is life-belt, with openings d, as indicated in Fig. 3. The openings (Z are normally closed by a sliding lid f, which is guided in grooves suitably provided and which is fittedwith a ring or; hook 9. To this ring or hook g is attached a cord or chain h, which is securely fastened on deck or at the railing at the place where the, life-belt is hungup. An opening 6' inthe oil reservoir. 0 accessible through the float a serves for filling-inthe oil. A screw-lid or otherequivalent tight I Specificationof Letters Patent.
pro vided, both on top and at the bottom of the the cord or chain it, which is securely fas-- tened on deck or at the railing as stated,

pulls the sliding lid f off and thus uncovers the openings cl so that the oil issues from the reservoir 0 while the left-belt swims on the water. The oil distributed calms the water around the "life-belt in the usual known manner and in this way facilitates the saving act-ion. l "i i After use the life-belt taken from the water can be reinstalled subsequent to its oil reservoir 0 having been refilled and the oilissuing openings d having been tightly closed again by means of the sliding lid f.
Theemployment of the sliding lid f for closing the oil-issuing openings J in the reservoir c entails the advantage that the control of the oil charge and of the applicability of the device can be easily and quickly eflected.
While I have shown in the. accompanying drawingsthe preferred form of myinvention, it will be understood that I do not limit myself tothe precise form shown, for
many of the details may be changed in form or position without aifecting the operativeness or utility of my invention, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such. modi-j fications' as are included within the scope of the following claims,or of mechanical equivalents t-o thestructure set forth.
What I do claim as my invention, and
desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. Ina life-belt or equivalent life-saving device the combination of a float, an oil reservoir fixed inside the said'float in a chamber provided therein, said oil reservoir provided with normally closed'oil-issuing openings at the top and bottom of the float, and
means in fixed connection with the deck or- V railing at the plate where the life-belt is hung up for uncovering the oil-issuing openings on throwing the life-belt into the water, substantially as described'and shown.
2. In a life-belt or equivalent life-saving device the combination of a float, an oil-reservoir fixed inside the said'float in a chamber provided therein, said oil reservoir pro- 7 vided with normally closed oil-issuing openings at the top and bottom of the float, and
a sliding lid movable in suitable'guides for; 10
closing the aforesaid oil-issuing openings of my name this 17th day of September 1912,
the oil reservoir, and means securely atin the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
tached t0 the slidin lid in fixed connection with the deck or railing at the place where FRIEDRICH GHRISTIANSEN' 5 the life-belt is hung up, substantially as de- Witnesses:
scribed and shown. ERNEST H. L. MUMMENHOFF,
In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed EDUARD HOPP.
