eramos FREDERICK OTTO MINEB., OF CEAFTN, P12N1li'SYLVAITIA.l
To all whom. it may Concern.
Be it known that l, Fnnnnnlcn OTTO Minen, a citizen of the `United States, residing at Grafton, in the county of Allegheny and State oi Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buoys, ofwhich the followingis a specification.
C)This invention relates to improvements in buoys'and has for its' object to provide a buoy adapted to indicate the location of a sunken vessel.
Another object o the invention is to provide a combined buoy, oil dispensingdevice and receptacle for foods, water and' pyrotechnical signaling devices.
Still another object of the invention 1s to vprovide a traveling buoy adapted to carry a life line from a wrecked vessel to shore.
Another object of'ffthe invention is to provide a series of buoys having means where by they are held in direct connection with a sunken vessel.
Withthe above and other objects in view which will be more fully explained in the following specification, l have invented lthe `device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational View of a sunken vessel showing my invention in operative connection therewith'. Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevational view of a buoy. Fig.
- 3 is a detail top plan of a cradle. Fig. 4
is a section on line A-A, Fig. 2 and Fig. 5 is a,view similar to Fig. 4 but shown in a disassembled position.
Like reference characters `indicate like parts throughout the specification and in the several views in the drawings in Which- 1 indicates steam ship which has sunken to a posi ion of approximately 4000 feet` below the surface of the sea, and 2, 3 and 4 are buoys connected to said vessel. The construction and operation of these buoys all being the same only 'one will be described.
The buoy 2 is a bell buoy having a bell 5 mounted upon the apex 6 of the dome 7 by means of the frame 8. This bell buoy is divided into an upper compartment 9, which is adapted to hold fresh water for drinking purposes and a lower compartment is filled 'with compressed air and a seriesof smaller compartments ll which are adapted to hold compressed food and Skyrock-etsv or other distress signaling devices, matches, ctc.

12 is a screw cap forming a closure for concave so as to seat upon the convex top 1.6 of the chamber 17 said chamber Vlaming extending side walls 18, having openings 19 therein. rlhe walls formy a cradle -in which the buoy 2 normally rests. The open'- ings 19 being adapted to admit Water mto said cradle when the buoy 2 floats out this .preventing suction from holding said buoy against free movement. y
Within the chamber 17 is mounted upon bearings 20' and 21a freely rotatable drum `22 upon which is wound a cable 23 one end 24 of which is lixed to the central part/of the Wall 15 so that when the buoy 2 floats and the vessel 1 sinks, the cable 23 will be Vgradual-ly unwound. The chamber 17 is kept filled with oil 25. This oil performs the double function of keeping the cable from rusting and graduallyA seeping out through the cable opening 26 after the vessel sinks and rising to the surface of the water and calming the same.
rl`he bottom wall 27 ,of the chamber 17 forms a top wall for the air chamberv 23.
'Ihis chamber is also filled with compressed air and its Wall 29 is semi-spherical so as to seat snugly into the similarly shaped cradle 30. This cradle is'. also provided with openings, marked 3l. The cradle 30 is mounted upon a tubular support 32 which connects with the chamber 33. Mounted Within the chamber 33 is a spindle 34 upon which is freely rotatably mounted a drum 35 upon `which is wound the cable 36 the upper end 37 of which passesk through the tube 32 and it is iixed to the Wall 29, and the other end 38 of which is Xed to the center of a disk 39`which is provided with vperforations 40. When the cable 36 is entirely unwound from the drum 35 and is drawn through the tube 32, the disk 39 engages the Wall 41 of saidu chamber 33 and holds said cable 36 fixed to said Wall 41. 4The perforations 40 permit oil, with which said chamber 33` is kept filled to pass through the tube 32 whereby the oil will float to the surface of the Water and calm the same and'thus the water directly over metal', will remain in the water near the buoys and keep the sea calm over the sunken vessel, thus permittingv persons to. cling to the bell buoys with less danger of being Washed away and also permitting them to get at the water. and provender in the compartnients and to lire ed sky rockets ,from
- .be several thousand feet.
the sup ort 42 formed on the outer surface of said ell buoy for the purpose. A series ltanks l0 and 28 pulling on the cable 36 thusi permitting said cable to entirelyunwind if necessary. f f
The device operates as follows z-When a vesselsinks the member 28 floats, the cable 36 gradually unwinding as the vessel goes down until the entirecable is spent after which said compartment or air tank 28 is held in a relative position to the -vessel according to the length of the cable, which may After the Vcable 36` has unwound its entire length thebellbue 2 begins .to float from its cradle and the'l cab e (which is of a smaller thickness than thecable 36) be 'ns to. unwind until the vesv .sel stops going own, the bell-buoy remains lioating on the surface -of the water. Per sons floating or in boats may readily reach the belllbuoys to get water and food A orsignals. The oil arising from the oil taiiks .33 and l" will keep the surface of the water around said buoys calm.
Should a vessel become stranded on the' rocks, the bell-buoy can be removed from .its
cradle and cast upon the Water and the Waves will carry it to shore and the cable 23 with it this will act as a life line, by means of which persons on the vessel may be carriedashore. n
Each of the buoys 2, 3 and 4 are painted different colors in order that it 'may be determined from the color of the'buoy which is the stern and which is the bow 'of' thevessel. l
