noon-CHECK.
Application led June 5, 1912. Serial No. 701,897.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BnNJAMiN F. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Junction, in the county of Mesa and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Door-Check, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door checks, its object being to. provide a simple structure of this character adapted to automatically engage the floor when the door is partly or entirely open, said check being actuated by the latch of the door so that each time the knob is turned so as to shift the latch out of normal position the check is disengaged from the floor and the door can thus be moved freely.
Another object is which .serves vas a closed.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which can be used in connection with either mortise or rim locks, the said check being adjustable to doors of different sizes and to locks at different points upon the doors.
With the foregoing to provide a door check lock when the door 1s and other objects in view which will appear as the description.
proceeds, the invention resides in the cornbination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the'claim, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
ln the accompanying drawings the preferred forms of the invention have been shown.
In said drawings :--Figure 1 isa view partly in side elevation and partly in sec'- tion of a` door having the present improvements combined therewith, only a portion of the door being shown. F ig. 2 is a side elevation of the door lock removed from position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section through a portion of the lock, the cheek being shown partly in section and partly in elevation. Fig. llis an elevation of the upper portion of the check attachment and showing that side thereof nearest the door lock. Fig. 5 is a transverse section through a portion of a rim lock and showing thenp- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 7,1913.
6 isa side elevation of a portion of the door latch and of the upper portion of the attachment and showing a modified means for coupling the attachment and the latch. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. G. Fig. 8 is an inner elevation of the upper portion of the check attachment shown in- Figs. 6 and 7.
Referring to the gures by characters of reference A designates a portion of a door which, in Figs. 1 and 3 is shown provided with a mortise lock 1 having a slot 2 in one side of its casing, said slot registering with another slot 3 formed in one side ofthe door The latch 4 of the lock is of the usual sliding type designed to be held n0rmally projected by a suitable spring, not shown, tating a knob, not shown. The latch 4 differs from the ordinary latch in that it is provided with parallel diagonally disposed upper and lower edge portions 5. These edge portions are adapted to be engaged by spaced teeth 6 the active faces of whlch are beveled, as shown particularly in Fig. 4, so
as thus to ride easily along the edges i5,.-
These teeth extend from one end of a plate 7 which is slidable within the slots 2 and 3 and extends beyond the slotted face of the door A. This projecting portion of the plate is fitted adjustably within a slot 8 extending through the upper end portion of a rod 9, there being a set screw 10 in the rod and engaging the plate 7 for holding saidd plate against movement relative to the ro The rod 9 extends downwardly along the door A and is adapted to reciprocate within guide brackets 10 and 11. The lower bracket 11 guides a foot 12 from the lower end of which projects a nipple 13 of rubber, leather or other soft material designed to engage the floor.. A socket 14 is formed in the upper end of the foot 12 and the lower end of rod 9 isscrewed thereinto. Thus it will be' seen 'that it is lpossible to vary the distance between the nipple 13 and the upper end of the rod 9. As the latch 4 is normally projected onal edge 5 of the latch will normally press downwardly on the lower tooth (i and thus hold the nipple 13 pressed against the rfloor. As stron as the'latch 4 is retracted., "as by turning the knob provided therefor, the upand adapted to be retracted by robeyond the lock casing- 1 it will be apparent that the lower diag- 1
