JULIUS HESS, OF STRASSBURG-NEUDORF, GERMANY.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING THE HAIR 0R FUR 0F SKINS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 12, 1912.
Patented Jan. 7, 1913.
Serial No. 683,269.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs Hess, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Strassburg-Neudorf, in Alsace-Lorraine, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Cutting the Hair or Fur of Skins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in cutting fur or hair from skins.
The fur or hair of skins, especially of rabbit skins required for the manufacture of hats and other felted goods, must not be pulled apart .in cutting or shearing, but must remain together after being cut off in the same relative position as it occupied when on the skin. WVith this object in view, the hair of such skins has mostly been cut off by the aid of very quickly revolving disk knives but this tended to cause (through the air current produced by the rotation of the knife) a large quantity of waste. It is moreover known to cut the hair from such skins by means of a knife moving up and down, but the necessary speed cannot be attained with such a device.
In the present invention the cutting knife is moved in the manner hereinafter set forth by means of two eccentrics which give it a to and fro mot-ion. By this meansthere is obtained a great rapidity of motion for the knife and at each motion to and fro of the knife a cutting action takes place and finally by reason of the sloping thrusting cut smooth removal of the hair is attained. The skin with the hair side down- Ward is drawn forward by the delivery rollers against the cutting mechanism. The rollers are only move-d from time to time and this always after the conclusion of a cutting stroke whereas they are static-nary during the cut. According to the kind of skins operated upon, the rollers are brought nearer to the cutting mechanism or farther removed from it.
The invention is illustrated in the drawing as follows:
Figure 1 shows a front elevation. Fig. 2 a plan view and Fig. 3 a sectional view.
The points of the hair are held back on the advance of the skin through the rollers a, Z), so that the part of the skin which lies between the cutter and its opposite blade is cut off and the hair itself becomes free while the fragments of skin fall down in thin strips together with the roots of the hair. The hair which holds together in the natural position and is separated from the hair roots, slips down over a guide 0 and is received upon tables in the well known manner or is carried farther by mechanically operated bands. The cutting off of the particles of skin is effected as stated, by aid of the cutter s, which is secured upon a bar held by the eccentric rings 6. The eccentrics u move in directions opposed one to the other. The actuation of the eccentric shaft r is effected by the aid of a belt 1) and pulley 72. The eccentric shaft 3/ is driven from the eccentric shaft 1" by a twisted belt 2.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed I declare that what I claim is:
1. A fur or hair cutting machine comprising in combination, means for advancing the skin, a relatively fixed knife, a coacting knife, and rotating devices imparting a longitudinal shearing and a to and fro movement to said coacting knife, substantially as described.
2. A fur or hair cutting machine comprising in combination, a relatively fixed knife, means for advancing the skin thereto, a coacting knife blade and an eccentric device at each end of said coacting blade for imparting a shearing and a to and fro movement thereto, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JULIUS HESS.
