BASIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 14., 1912.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARCHIE MAGNUSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spencer, in the county of Clay and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Basins, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to basins, and more particularly to the class of plug operated means for wash basins or the like.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of means for operating the dram pipe valve or plug wherein the said valve or plug will be normally sustained in closed position and which can be readily operated for the raising of the same whereby the drain pipe will be opened so that the contents of the basin can be discharged therefrom without requiring a person fingering the plug or valve for extracting it after the basin has been filled.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a basin plug or valve operating means which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in operation, and inexpensive in manufacture and installation, not requiring alteration in the type of basins now in use.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a basin showing the plug or valve operating means constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view therethrough. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of the operating lever and the plug or valve connected therewith.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals 5 designates a basin of the usual or any preferred type, provided with a discharge opening 6 leading to a drain pipe 7 which is adapted to be connected to a sewer main as usual. Formed on the basin 5 is a rim or outturned flange 8 and suitably anchored in the latter at the rear of the basin 5 is a depending hanger 9 to which is connected a rocking valve or plug operating lever 10, the same extending through a suitable guide slot 11 formed in the basin 5 to the interior thereof, the lever being engaged upon a pivot 12 mounted in the hanger 9 and has a portion downwardly bowed as at 13 to conform to the curvature of the side wall of the basin.
Adapted for engagement in the discharge opening 6 in the basin 5 is a valve or plug 14 which is connected by means of a pivot 15 in the inner end 16 of the operating lever 13, so that upon the rocking of the lever in one direction the valve or plug let will be raised for permitting the contents of the basin to discharge through the discharge opening 6 into the drain pipe 7 as usual.
In alinement with the outer end of the operating lever 13 and formed in the rim or flange 8 of the basin is a vertical guide opening 17 in which is slidably mounted a push stem 18, the same being pivoted at 19 to the outer end of the operating lever 13 at its lower end, while its opposite end is formed with a head 20 whereby the same can be readily pushed for the raising of the inner end of the operating lever 13 for the lifting of the valve or plug 14 from its seat in the dischargeopening 6 in the basin 5, the valve or plug 14 being normally seated in the discharge opening 6 in a manner presently described.
Surrounding the push stem 18 is a coiled expansion spring 21 one end of which works against the head 20, while its opposite end works against the rim or flange 8 of the basin, so that normally the push stem 18 is held elevated whereby the valve or plug 14: will be sustained seated in the discharge opening 6 for the closing of the same.
Fixed in and depending from the valve or plug 14 is a pendulum stem 22, the same be ing formed at its lower end with a weight 23 which serves to balance the valve or plug 14 for the centering thereof to efiect the proper seating of the same in the discharge opening 6 in the basin, the seat for the valve or plug being of any approved construction.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be clearly understood, and therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is The combination with a basin having a discharge opening therein, of a valve normally closing said opening a pendulum stem ally connected to the operating lever for depending from said valve and having a actuating the same. 10 Weighted end for properly seating the said In testimony whereof I aflix my signature valve in the opening, a hanger depending in presence of two witnesss.
