To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Priimr Knitr'rnn. a
citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in' the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, "have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for Presses and the Like, of which the following isa spec-ification reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming apart thereof. V
This invention relates more particularly to attachments for presses or machines having reciprocating or intermittently operating tools, such as punching, cutting and stamping machines. its main object is to prevent injury to the hands of the operatives of such machines without interfering with the adjustments and proper operation of the machines. 1
It consists in the construction, arrange- ;ment and combination of parts as herein- Eafter particularly described and pointed out fin the claims. I
In the accompanying drawing li'ke characters designate the same parts in the several figures. I r
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a punching press to which the tool guard is applied in accordance with the-in'ventionyh ig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of the upper portion of the press showing the guard folded; Fig. 8 is a front elevation the guard and the bed of the press showing the guard unfolded or extended to block the approach to the tool; Fig. a is across section on the line F 52, showing the guard in plan and 6 are detail views-of parts of the guard operating connections; and Fig.
7 a 7 is a partial front elevation of the preferred form of the guard. p
For the purpose of illustration a guaru embodying the invention is shown as app-lied to a unc-hing machine or press, hutit is applicable within-He or no change to other-niachines having reciprocating or intermitmeans for controlling the operation of the tools, such as stamp ng, cutting, embossing and drawing presses or similar machines.
Referring to the drawing, a designates l r t f the frame of a unchinm the upper PM i O p D 'i nterferein the least with the:- operation of machine or presswhich in the pres'entw"-ca.se is pivotally or adjustahly mounted on the base or lower part l? of the frame so as to set Fig. 3, to permit of, the
the punch in a vertical position or at any The. machinev desired inclination thereto. has the usual vertically reciprocating cross head and tool holder 0., guided in waive (Z on the frame a, andronnected by a pitma-ire with a horizontal cranlr or eccentric shaftj" mounted "aboveit in hearings on l'llQfilIlilG a,
in the usual or any suitable manner. The press has a trip g connected by a rod h with a treadle or foot lever 2' for operating a clutch j by which the drive wheel is loosely mounted on the shaft is locked,
thereon when the treadle or footle-ver i is depressed. A retracting spring Z connecting the treadle or foot lever i with the frame section b aided by a spring m on the trip 9, automatically disconnects the shaft from the drive wheel is when the treadle or foot lever i is released by the operator.
The machine thus briefly described, is of a common well known type to which no claim per se is made herein. r
The guard constituting the present invention is adapted to unfold up or down across the approach to the tool of the press-or other machine, and when folded to completely clear the approach- .to the tool both from the front and the sides of the press or machine. It consists of two parallel bars a and 0, which are connected witheach-other by lazytongs p, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In the present case the lazy-tongs are shown as double to afford when extended or unfolded,
a more effective barrier across the approach lized for this purpose, as shown in Fig.- 4.
The upper and lower members of the lazytongs 79 have horizontally slotted pivot connections with the bars n and 0, as shown in folding and unfolding of the'lazytongs, which :fold compactly, permitting the lowermovablebar 0 to approach close tdtheupper stationarybar a, as showri'iirfFig. 2: W hen thus folded, the uard is entirely out ofthe way and does not the machine, or with the removal, replacement and adjustment of tools or dies therein.
In the present case the machine is shown as furnished with a punch 1 in the cross head or tool holder 0 and with a die 8 on the bet! orwork support t. The guard is so applied to the machine that when it is closed or folded and the cross head or tool holder r: with the punch or tool 1' is in its upper position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the space between the cross head and table 2- will be entirely clear and unobstructed for feeding end of the bar 0 and fulcrumed at its rear end on the side of the frame .11, connected by a rod with the treadle or foot lever} in such a any as to unfold orextend the guard downwardly in 'advanceof the tripping of the clutch j and the descent of the cross head 0 with the punch r or other tool carried thereby when the treadle foot lever i is depressed by the operator to start the machine.
The operating connections of the trip 9 and the lever a with the treadle i are so arranged and' adjusted that the guard will be extended and the bar o carried into contact or close proximity with the bed If as shown in Fig. 3, before the trip" is moved into posi tion to engage the clutch and start the tool, so that if the descent of the bar 0 is arrested before it reaches the bed t, the operation of the tool will be prevented, thereby absolutely avoiding injury to the hands and tingers of the operator without interfering in the least with the proper operation of the machine.
To aid in holding the-movable bar 0 parallel with the stationary bar n .ofthe guard, the lever u is formed at its front end with an extended sleeve w fitting upon an extended pivot pin w formed with or attached to the bar 0, as shown in Fig. 6.
. Folvarying the limits of the. movement of the lever u in applying the guard to different machines and to compensate for changes in the inclination or adjustment of the upper part a of the frame with relation to the base or lower part b, the fulcrum connection of the lever with the frame is made adjustable. For this purpose the fulcrum pin 3 is adjustably fastened by a nut z in a vertical slot of a looped keeperor angular bar 2, which is bolted 'to one side of the frame section a. as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. The pin 3 is adjusted up or down in the keeper or bar 2 by a screw 3, having a swivel I connection with said pin and tlll'emletl in the upper part of the keeper or bar in which or to limit the downward movement of the bar 0 at different points for different kinds of work, as, for example, work which when placed in position in the machine projects forwardly beyond the path of the guard.
To prevent the operator from reaching around the ends of the guard into the path of the tool and at the same time starting the machine, the movable bar 0 of the guide is formedbr provided at or adjacent to its ends with rearwardly extending arms'f), as shown in Figs. 1, 4 andfi.
\Vhen the guard is made of considerable length. to insure its unfolding alike at both ends and to keep the movable bar 0 parallel with the stationary bar n. two corresponding upper members of the lazy-tongs are extended, as shown in Fig. 7. beyond the pivots between them and the bar a and are connected with said bar by springs 6, which take up play or lost motion in the pivot joints of the lazy-tongs and cause the bar 0 to move parallel with the bar a and the bedi when the guard is unfolded and folded.
In the operation of the machine the attendant having placed a blank or piece of material to be punched on the die a. depresses the' treadle 2' which operates through the lever u to first spread or extend the guard and. carry the bar 0 thereof down against the bed t, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1' and by full lines in Fig. 3. and
then after the approach to the punch and die is effectively blocked by the unfolding or spreading of the guard. to operate the clutch j and thereby cause the punch to de scend. When the treadle is released by the operator the retracting spring Z. drawing it back into its original position'as shown in Fig. 1, operates through the connections hereinbefore-described to close or fold the guard upwardly out of the way and to dis-- engage the clutch and stop the cross head 0 and punch after they-have been withdrawnto their upper position.
\Yith the construction and arrangement of the operating connections of the clutch, trip and tool guard as herein shown and described, the operator cannot Start the maline or set the toolin motion without first causing the guard to descend across and block theapproach to the tool, and as long the tre'adle is depressed and the tool continucs to operate. the guard will remain extended and obstruct the approach thereto.
A repet tion of the operation of the punch cannot take place without extendingthe guard in advance thereof or its being held extended so as to ett'ectually prevent the operator from thrusting his hands orfingers into dangerous proximity With the punch.
Variouschanges in the details of construction and arrangement of parts of the device in adapting and applying it to difierent machines for ditferent purposes and under varying conditions may be made wit-hout departing from the principle and scope ---operation of its movable tool or member, of
a guard attachable to a stationary part of the press out of the approach to the tool, movable up and down across the approach to the tool and adapted to fold into small compass clear of the approach to the tool both in -t'ront and at the sides of the press, and when untolded to obstruct the approach to the tool, and means connected with said guard and with said controlling means and adapted to cause the unfolding of the guard in advance of the operation of the tool.
2. Therco-mbination with a press comprising means for controlling its operation, of a folding guard attachable to the press above the approach to the tool and adapted to fold upwardly into small compass and to unfold downwardly across and obstruct the approach to the tool, and means connected with said guard and cont-rolling means and adapted to eause the unfolding of the guard in ad ance of the operation of the tool and prevent the operation of the tool when the 4 unfolding of the guard is obstructed.
