UNlTED STATES PATENT @FFXQE.
ANTHONY F. MGDONNELL, OF SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
DO OR-CATCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY F. MCDON- NELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Scranton, in the county of Laokawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Catches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door catches and, more particularly, to that form of catch intended to be fastened to the door and contflact with a retaining member fastened to the oor.
The object of my invent-ion is to provide a simple, cheap and efficient device of this character which may be easily applied to the door.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of one form of the device showing the position of the parts when the door is caught back. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view showing a slight variation in the catch. Fig. 4 is a side elevation. Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing a method of connection when the door swings close to the floor. Fig. 6 is a side elevation showing another form designed for a door which swings close to the floor.
In said drawings, a leaf 1 provided with recesses for the reception of screws or bolts to fasten the same to a door has hinged thereto the leaf 2 forming a catch. A resilient member of any suitable form but preferably, as here shown, a coiled spring 3 keeps the leaves normally in the same plane. WVhile leaf 1 is ordinarily a flat piece it is obvious that it may be of angular form, as shown most clearly in Fig. 6, when it is desired to attach the same to a door swinging close to the floor. A plate A provided with recesses for the reception of screws for the purpose of fastening the same to the floor, has pivoted or hinged thereto the latch or catch member 5, and interposed between said plate and latch is a resilient member 6. Plate 4 may be flat or provided with an upturned portion 7, as shown most clearly in Fig. 1, said portion 7 acting as a stop for said door. Portion 7 may be integral with Specification of Letters Patent.

said plate 4 or hinged thereto with a resilient member interposed, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3, in which case it tends to grip the leaf 2 and prevent rattling of the door.
As will be readily understood, the tension of the spring between plate 4: and latch 5 should be light so that the door may be easily swung back into posit-ion, while that of the spring between leaves 1 and 2 should be suflicient to withstand the weight of the door and any slight strain that might be put upon it. It is also obvious that the action of the respective parts may be reversed making the member fastened to the door swing in the opposite direction to that shown and the catch likewise swing in the opposite direction to the one herein, in which case the relative tensions of the springs would be reversed.
In practice my device is operated as follows: The parts being placed in position as shown, when the door is opened, leaf 2 strikes against latch 5 depressing the same and allowing leaf 2 to pass, when the latch springs back into place and holds the door open; a slight pull upon the door will cause leaf 2 to bend back allowing it to pass latch 5 and the door to close.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A door catch comprising a spring hinge having one leaf adapted to be fastened to a door and the other leaf free from the door, and a catch member having a spring latch hinged thereto that is located in the path of movement of the free leaf.
2. A door catch comprising a stationary plate having a spring latch hinged thereto, and a door member having a spring hinge connection with a door and adapted to ride over the spring latch.
3. A door catch comprising a resilient catch adapted to be carried by a door, a resilient latch adapted to be carried by a floor and arranged in the path of movement of the catch, and a stationary member adjacent the latch and arranged in the path of movement of the catch.
4. A door catch comprising a door plate, In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my a catch havmg a sprlng hinge connectlon slgnature in presence of tWo wltnesses.
with the plate at one end, a stationary floor plate having a stop at one end for engaging ANTHONY MGDONNELL' the catch, and a yieldable latch at the oppo- Witnesses:
site end of the plate for engaging the catch THADDEUS MoDoNNELL,
in advance of the stop. MARGARET MODONNELL.
