Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARVEY M. FREED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sellersville, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in shoes, and more particularly to shoes designed for miners use, the object of the invention being to provide a shoe having a metal reinforced tip which extends over the edges of the sole, and protects the front end of the shoe against jagged rocks and other sharp surfaces which would otherwise cut the shoe.

A further object is to provide an improved shoe of this character which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonably low cost and which will be strong and durable in use.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a broken plan view illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a View in longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in longitudinal section on an enlarged scale.

1, represents the shoe proper which is formed of leather and is provided with a projecting sole 2. 3, is a reinforcing tip composed of sheet metal shaped to conform to the shape of the toe of the shoe, and this tip is provided at its lower edge with a sole protector 4.

In forming the tip and sole protector, the metal is bent inwardly under the insole 5, and is secured thereto by rivets 6. The sole protector is formed by projecting the metal out over the extended portion of the sole, then down beside the edge thereof, and then under the sole for a short distance so that the entire outer and upper surfaces of the sole are covered by the metal.

To further secure the metal tip to the shoe, a metal bar 7 is employed. This bar 7 is provided on its upper outer face with a central longitudinal enlargement 8. A leather strip 9 is positioned over the bar 7 as seen most clearly in Fig. 4:, and the metal tip 3 is bent over the bar and positioned on top of the leather strip 9, and said bar 7 leather strip 9, and tip 3 are secured together by rivets 10. The leather strip 9 extends rearwardly beyond the bar 7, and is secured to the shoe by lines of stitching 11. It will thus be seen that the metal tip is not only secured to the insole by the rivets 6, but is also secured to the shoe by means of the stitches 11. The bar 7 serves to strengthen the tip and prevents collapse of the metal if a weight should fall upon the tip.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A reinforcing tip for shoes composed of sheet metal bent to conform to the shapeof the toe of the shoe and the forward portion of the sole of the shoe, a transversely positioned bar having a raised portion thereon, a strip of flexible material on said bar, the said metal toe protector at its rear end bent over and conforming in shape to the shape of the bar, rivets securing said bar strip and metal protector together, and said strip adapted to be secured to the shoe, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a shoe having a sole therein projecting out beyond the toe portion of the shoe, a toe protector composed of sheet metal covering the toe portion of r the shoe and the outwardly projecting .por-

tion of the sole, said shoe having an insole, rivets securing said toe protector to the insole, a transversely positioned bar secured to said tip, a strip of flexible material secured to the bar. and a line of stitching securing said flexible strip to the shoe, substantially as described.
