Be it known that I, FREDERICK F. IVHIT- TAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at'I/Vollaston, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Toy Banks, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to receptacles formed of detachable parts, which, while they may be of general application, are more particularly intended for use as toy banks.

In order that the principles of the invention may be clearly understood, I have disclosed a single type or embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the receptacle in assembled position; Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the two parts of which the receptacle is preferably formed; and Fig. 1 is a transverse vertical section of the upper portion of the receptacle shown in Fig. 1.

Referring to the single type or embodiment of my invention herein selected for illustration, the receptacle is, in this type of i the invention, composed of a bottom portion 1 having opposite upstanding sides 2 and 3, and a top portion 4 having opposite depending sides 5 and 6. Vhile the top and bottom portions may be made of any suitable material, preferably I construct them of thin sheet metal permitting opposing walls to be sufficiently compressed by the pressure of the thumb and finger thereagainst to release the holding means. Preferably I provide the side walls of one of the portions with anges to receive and guide the edges of the sides of the other portion.

In Fig. 2, I have represented the upstanding side walls 2 and 3 as provided with vertical side flanges 7-7 and 8 8, which, when the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 1, overlie the edges of the sides 5 and 6 of the top portion. Preferably I provide means to space or properly position the lower or free ends of the depending sides 5 and 6 when in assembled position. In this type of the invention, I accomplish this result by providing upstanding flanges 9 (one of which is shown in Fig. 2) between the side walls 2 and 3. Preferably, and as shown in the broken away portion of Fig. 2, the flanges 9 are herein sufficiently spaced from the side flanges 8 to permit the passage of the edges of the side walls 5 and 6. It will be apparent that when the parts are assembled the lower free ends of the side walls 5 and 6 are firmly supported in their proper spaced relation, so that the receptacle cannot readily be collapsed or bent by pressure applied upon the side walls at the lower end thereof.

I preferably provide suitable holding means to retain the parts in assembled position. While various expedients may be resorted to to accomplish this purpose, herein I have represented one of the parts as provided with preferably a plurality of tongues to engage a slot or slots formed upon the other portion. In this type of the invention, I have represented, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the side walls 2 and 3 as provided with slots 10 and 11, one of which (the slot 10) is represented as enlarged to permit the insertion of coins or the like into the receptacle. The top portion f1 is herein represented as provided with depending flanges 1.2 and 13 discontinuous with the sides 5 and 6, as represented in Fig. 3, said flanges being provided with inturned tongues 14 and 15, which engage the slots 10 and 11 when the parts are assembled. The side walls 2 and 3 are sufficiently flexible to permit the disengagement of the tongues 12 and 13 from the slots 10 and 11 upon the application of slight inward pressure upon the walls 2 and 3.

Preferably, the side walls 5 and 6 are sufficiently prolongedto form feet 16 which,

when the parts are assembled, extend below the bottom 1.

It will be apparent that the receptacle, while presenting an exceedingly simple construction, is of sufficient strength to permit its application to varied uses and that it may be cheaply constructed.

It will be observed that the construction of part-s is such that the two portions may be telescoped into position while maintaining the bottom l and top 4f in parallel relation.

Having thus described one type or embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are/ employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense, and 'not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention beingY alternating with the depending sides andVV provided with inwardly extending tongues, the upstanding side walls being provided with slots to be engaged b-y said tongues, one of the slots being enlarged for Athe insertion of material into the receptacle.

2. A receptacle composed of detachable parts and comprising a top having an opposed pair of depending side walls and a bottom having an opposed pair of upstandngside walls alternating `with the depending walls, means upon said bottom to engage and space the free ends of the depending side walls, one of said side walls being provided with a slot and the top being provided with a tongue to engage therewith, said slot in said side wall being enlarged to permit the insertionof material into the receptacle.
