To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CALVIN RUSSELL, of Penn Yan, in the county of Yates and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Celery-Bleaching Apparatus, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing. f

It is the object of my invention to provide compactly transportable means which may be repeatedly used to temporarily exclude light fromrows o'f celery plants, and which is capable of withstanding exposure to the weather without deterioration except such as is incident to wear.

As hereinafter described, my invention includes two flexible, webs ot' water proof fabric consisting of wool saturated and coated with asphalt, arranged to be supported upon respectively opposite sides ot' rows of celery pl nts, and, means detaining said webs a. unniorm distance apart, inelasing said plants, i'nciinlingta'scrics of wire staples each having two opposite parallel limbs extending into the ground, respectively exterior to said webs, and an intermediate portion transversely connecting said lixnbsabove said webs.

As indicated .in Fig. II said webs 8 and t) extend in vertically parallel planes, and, it is to be understood that said fabric is so constructed that although it is capable ot' being compactly rolled it is .suliiei-enlly rigid to maintain itself ln a vertical plane without supporting means. However, in order t9 temporarily retain said webs 8 and 9 a unlform ydistance apart,l inclosing said plants 12, I prefer to employ a series of wire staples 14 each having two opposite parallel limbs extending into the ground, respectlvely exterior to said webs, and an intermediate portion transversely connecting said limbs above said webs. Although l have shown such staples 14 proportioned to detain the webs the proper distance apart to exclude the light from a single row of celery plants 12, it is to be understood that il said plants are set Iin double rows, such staples may be so proportioned as to detain the webs aforesaid in proper relation to such a double row; that is to say, the staples may be made with longer intermediate portions transversely connecting their limbs above said webs. i

I do not desire to limit myselt'to the preoise details of construction and arrangement above described as various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claims.

I claim l 1. In celery bleaching apparatus, 'a pair of Webs of substantially water prooi llexible fabric, formed of wool telt saturated and coated with asphalt, sutliciently 'rigid to maintain itself in a vertical plane without supporting means, extending upon respectively opposite sides of a row of celery; and, means maintaining said webs in position to bleach said celery, including a series of wire staples.
