Original application led April 25, 1911, Serial No.' 623,136. Divided and this application led July 1, 1911. Serial No. 636,503.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that LEDGARD FRANKIGNOUL, a subject of the Kingdom of Belgium, residing at 196 Rue Gretry, Liege, Belgium, have invented vcertain new and useful Improvements in Tubing for Boring; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable4 others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures ot' reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This is a division of an application filed by me under date ot' April 25th, 1911, Ser. No. 623,138.
This invention relates to tubular boringr apparatus in which the tubular structure. including a plurality of sections, is sunk into the soil by means ot' a succession o'tl blows applied at the forward or directing' end of' the structure.
An object oit' my invention is to construct the tubular structure in such a manner that the sections thereof may have tclcscopinir action, one section following` another as the structure is periodically sunk into thc ground. By this construction the handling and driving of a tubular structurel ot' considerable length is ftwilitated. and the nuliding ot' 'the structure in a predctcrrnined position insured.
Further objects oi' my invention will appear t'rorn thc following` detailed description taken lin connection with the accompanying' drawing.
The tubular structure comprises a plurality of sections, and includes an advance section l, and a following section 2, the length and number of which are dependent upon the desired length of the tubular structure to be sunk. v
In order that one section may follow another as they are driven'into the soil, section l is provided with an external flange 4, at its upper end, while section 2 is provided with an internal flange` 5, which latter when the section l has been driven sufficiently into "from the tubular structure.
the soil, engages the flange 4 and is carried with it.
The advance sect-ion 1 is provided with a shearing head 6, the upper portion of which forms an internal shoulder to receive a plugY 7. The lower portion of the plug 7 is tapered as at 8 vforming a trunco-conical portion, to facilitate entrance of the apparatits into the soil when being sunk. A succession of blows are imparted to the plug 7 by drop hammer or ram 9.
The ram t) is guided by a rod 10 which passes through a central aperture in the plug 7. pointed portion l2 is provided and such portion 'forms the enteringlr and foremost guidingij means of the apparatus.
The upper portion ot the pointed portion 'l2 'torms a shoulder l1 about the rod 10, and thus enables the plug 7 to be drawn after being sunk,
by raising' the rod 10. the shoulder 1l cn- ;g'agingf the tapered portion 8 oil.t the plug 7 carrying' thc latter with it.
The operation ot this device is as 'follows:-f-'l`he apparatus is positioned where it is desir-rd to bc sunk. 'l`hc rod l() then receives blows sntlcicntly to partly sink it, and in a desired lille or direction. During; such movement otE the rod l() the saine is prevented Vt'rrun buckling' bv its' passing tllrouc'h thc )luo' 7 and rant t). Vlie rain il is thcn brought' into action and when the lower portonot the plug' 7 contacts with thc shoulder Il, thc rod l0 is :u 'ain advanced lrv blows imparted thereto. .\s the advance section becomes sunk it draws with it each successive section h v engau'cnunt o t` the enacting' flanges. After having' .sucre-sfully started the advance section in the desired line ot movement each succeedingrl scction Follows in its path.
ln a tubular boring apparatus` the combination with a plurality ot telescopic liorinpj tubes provided with enacting' devices whereby the sinking otl one causes successive sinking' ot' the rt-.niainder o't the tubes, the tube to be initially sunk having a shearing lower edge and an internal ung'e, a tapering 'plug In testimony that claim the oregong ttlng sind 'tube and huvmg n. shoulder engaglng szud Hangs am lndependently op'nl presence of two subscmblng Wlt-nesses.
