This invention relates to post drivers and has for an object to provide a. hammering tube hav-- 8 rips on the sides by means of which the hammering tube may be rapidly raised and lowered upon the post during the driving operation.
A further object is to provides, post driver having novel guides which will particularly adapt the device for use in connection with posts of T-shape cross sections so that the wire supporting face of all of the driven posts will be in the same plane and thus promote ease of stapling the wire.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which will be formed of a few strong simple and inexpensive parts, which will be easy to manufacture, and which will not easily get out of order.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Figure l is a side elevation of a post driver constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 8-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view of the hammering tube with the guide sleeve removed to permit posts of circular cross section being driven.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, I I designates a hammering tube which is provided on the opposite side with long substantially U- shaped grips or handles it by means of which the tube maybe rapidly raised and lowered manually on the post during the driving operation. The top of the tube is solid for some distance below the extreme end of the tube, as shown in Figure 2, to provide a heavy weight, of substantially twenty pounds, more or less, which weight constitutes a hammer it when the tube is forcibly telescoped over the post during the driving operation.
The lower end of the tube It is uniformly reduced as shown at I! to receive a guide sleeve M. the upper end of which isadapted to contact with the shoulder ll formed by reducing the lower end of the tube. The guide sleeve is removably secured to the reduced lower end of the post by set screws i6, preferably four in number, arranged at an angular distance of.about a quadrant apart on the sleeve. The 5 sleeve is provided at the bottom with a plurality of longitudinal guide ribs I! which are substantially triangular in cross section and are arranged at an angular distance of about degreesapart on the inner wall of the sleeve below the reduced end ii of the tube.
In operation a post l8 of substantially T-shape cross section may be inserted endwise in the bore of the tube In and during such insertion the guide ribs I I will receive between them the web and the wire receiving flange of the post, as shown in Figure 3, so that the operator may set the post upon the ground with its wire receiving face in the plane of the post previously driven, as best shown in Figure 2. Thereupon the hammering tube may be raised and rapidly lowered on thepost and during the successive hammer blows the guide ribs ll will function to maintain the post properly aligned with its wire receiving face disposed in the plane of the wire 25 receiving face of the posts previously driven.
In Figure 4 it will be seen that the guide sleeve it may be dispensed with when it is desired to drive posts IQ of circular cross section.
Although a specific form of guide tube has 0 been described .as used in connection with 7- posts, it will be stated that the guide sleeve may be formed to receive posts of any other cross section within the scope of the invention.
From the above description it is thought that 5 the construction and operation of the invention villi be fully understood without further explanat on.
'Whatis claimed is:
I 1. A fence post driver comprising a hammering tube provided with a reduced lower end, and a guide sleeve removably secured to said reduced end and having guide ribs extending inwardly below the bottom of the tube and adapted to engage between the angularly disposed web and 45 flange of a T-post.

A fence post driver comprising a hammering tube, handles for manipulating the tube. the tube having a cylindrical bore, a sleeve on the lower end of the tube provided with longitudinally ex- 50 tending circumferentially spaced apart guide ribs extending inwardly below the bottom of the tube, and means for removably securing the sleeve to the tube.
