CAR END FRAME.
Speciflcation of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24,1912.
Application led April 9, 1912. Serial No. 689,567.
Toad 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY M.' Premian, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at St.
' Louis, ll'lissouri, have invented a certain new and useful vImprovemen t 'in Car End Frames of whichl the following'is a t'ull, clear, and
-exactdescriptioin such as will `enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reterencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure l is a vertical section taken transversely through the platform casting of a car underframe, and showing a car end frame of my improved construction in elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the end traine. Fig. 3 is a side elevation ot the end frame. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken approximately on the line 1li-Jl et'. Fig. 1. Fig. 5 a horizontal section taken approximately on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
This invention relates generally to railway car coiislruction and more particularly to cast mclal end frames t'or cars-ot' the type disclosed in Patent No. 917,7l6, issued April 6, 1909, and No. 929,705, issued August 3d, 1909.
One ot the most important features in the construction of the presentforms of railshocks and crushing stresses imparted t0- the ends ot' the ear, thereby providing a'\construction which is anti-.telescopic in etl'eet.
The principal objects of my present invention are to ncnerallv improve the construction ot the cast metal end trames disclosed in the patents above referred to, to form braces on the end frame and tix Vsaid braces o the under Vframe in such a manner as to igidly maintain said end frame in an up- 'ipght position, cross pieces and braces forming the end 'frame so as to utilize to the greatest possible advantage the strength of the material of which saidparts are formed in resisting end shocks and crushing stresses due to collisions.
To the above. purposes my invention consisls in certain novel -features ot' construction and arrangement ot' parts hereinafter more tully described and claimed.
Referring' by numerals to the accompanying drawings 'l designates the cur under frame, 2 the end sill which, in the present instance, is shown as an integral part-'0f the under frame. and 3 the lattorin casting which, as shown, is preferably integral with the end sillf The plane occupied by the top of thel platform casting 3 is substantially below the plane occupied by the top ol the end sill 2 and thus a vertically disposed shoulder is formed between the platform and the end sill and against which shoulder engages the lower portion of the end frame.
Formed integral willi the lower portion of the end sill 2 and projecting forwardly therefrom to the sides of the platform castin g,r are horizontally dis ioscd flanges 4 upon which rest the lower ends ot' the corresponding parts of the end frame.
My improved end frame as shown includes a pair of upright members 5 which perform the function ot door posts, a pair of intermediate upright members or posts' 6 andra pair of upright side members or posts 7 which latter perform the function of cornerposts for the car body. All of these posts are preferably channelshape in cross section, although other cross sectional shapes may be utilized, if desired, and the lower ends of said posts are united by vertically disposed web plates 8 which, when the frame is positioned for use, bear directly.
against the shoulder between the platform casting and the end sill, which shoulder is Iinreality the front face of said end sill.
The end frame is rigidly fixed t0 the end sill of the under frame by means of rivets orv like fastening. 'devices f) which pass through the web plates 8 and the front wall or web of the end sill.
The lower endsl ot the intermediate posts 6 and the corner posts 7 normally rest upon the flanges `l and the lower ends ofthe door posts 5 rest upon the side portions-0f the Gil platform casting Formed integral with the lower portion of each post o1' upright 7 is a rearwardly extending' bracket or heel portion l0 which rests directly upon the correspomling` side rail of the under frame. The horizontally disposed base flange l0a of this bracket is fixed to the corresponding part of the under frame by means of rivets or like Jfastening devices 11 and the eXtreme rear end of this bracket bears against the lug 12 formed on the under frame.
By the construction just described, the lower portion o f theend frame is rigidly fixed to the under frame and all end shocks or crushing' stresses imparted to the end frame are ettectually resisted by the bearing of the lower ends of the posts or uprights against the front. side of the end sill and by the engagement. of the rear ends lof the brackets 10 against the shoulders in front of the lugs 12. Any crushing stresses or shocks imparted to the, upper portion of the end frame tending to swing the upper portion of said frame inwardly will be resisted by the bearing of the brackets l0 directly upon top of the under frame.
The upper portions of the posts or uprights 5, 6. and 7 are united by integral horizontally disposed rails 13S preferably i.shape in cross section and formed integral with and extending" upwardly from the door posts 5 are short vertical posts 1stthe upper ends of which are united'bjt a horizontally disposed anglo plate 15. rlhe horizontal flange 15 of this plate performs the 'tunetion of a lintel for the door frame said fiange being widestl at its central portion and gradually tapering` toward its ends. The end portions of the rail l5 extend bcyoud the uprights 14 and said ends are co`nnected to the'end portions of the rails 13 by downwardly curved bracketsV 16.' lntermediate strengthening webs 17 preferably L-shape in cross section extend between the rails 13 and the cud portions of the rail 15. lmmediately above these intermediate strengthening` webs, are `vertim'llly disposed lags 1.8 which serve as supports for the lower portions of the Ventilator frames.
The outer .faces of the upper ends 'of the posts 7 are notched as designated by 19 to form seats for the side plates of the car body and the center webs between the flanges of the corner posts 7 are curved out.- wardly as designated by Q0 to meet the tlanges beneath the notched or cut away upper ends of said corner posts. The lower ends of the out fardly curved brackets 1.6
55 of the door posts 5 is a horizont-ally disposed terminate a short distance from the outer faces of the corner posts 7. thereby forming seats Q1 which accommodate the. upper por tions of the side plates ol the car body frame, and which plates rest on the seats 19.
Formed integral with the lower portions iai/sacas rail 22 which normally rests directly upon top of the central portion of the end sill 2 and performs the function of a threshold plate. Formed integral with the postsl or uprights 5, 6, and 7 and in aliuement with the beltJ rail of the car body are horizontally disposed rails 23.
llfly improved end frame which is preferably cast in a single piece can be readily applied to a car under frame and body and by providing brackets fon the lcorner posts and attaching the same direct to the under frame an exceptionally strong, rigid, antitelescoping construction is provided which alfort s a'maXimum degree of safety to the occupants of the car during collisions. Grdi nai-ily the greatestforceof end shocks and crushingT stresses occurring' during collisions is developed at or below thc belt rail of the car and for this reason it is especially desirable `that the lower portion of the end frame be substantially braced and ixed to the under frame so as to resist to the greatest extent the force of the blows and stresses resulting' from collisions. For this reason, l provide the brackets extending' rearwardly from the corner posts and unite the lower ends of all of the posts with the webs which bear directly against and are attached to the 'end sill of the under frame.
lt will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved end frame can be made and sulristituted foru those herein shown and described without depart-- ing from the spirit of .my invcntiom-the scope of which is set. forth in the accompauying` claims.
