CUSPIDOR FOR CARS AND THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAszno DOSZPOLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pottstown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Cuspidor for Cars and the Like, of which the following is a spccitication.
This invention relates to cuspidors, and for its primary object aims for the production of a euspidor applicable to steam and electric cars, steam boats and other conveyances, which shall be set into the floor and flush therewith, and which embodies a cover, and means for closing and opening the lower end or bottom of the euspidor as the cover is opened and closed.
The present invention also contemplates a device of the character indicated which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, and which shall be hygienic in its use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the invention is better understood, this invention resides in the novel combination and construction of parts hereinafter set forth and particularly pointed out in the claim, it being understood that this device is subject to alterations or deviations in its details within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein similar reference characters denote corresponding parts, and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cuspidor as applied to the floor. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof showing the cover closed. Fig. 3 is a similar view of Fig. 2 with the cover opened, parts being broken away. Fig. 4 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale of the valve employed in carrying out the present invention.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the present euspidor embodies an open floor plate or frame 6, and a chute 5 depending therefrom. As illustrated, the frame 6 is rectangular and the chute is of corresponding contour at its upper end and merges into a circular and contracted contour at its lower end. The said parts may be cast integral of suitable metal, may be constructed of sheet metal, and may be otherwise manufactured.

The frame or plate 6 is provided wit-h under cut guides 8 at its sides, and a stop or flange 7 at one end. The cover, which is designated by the numeral 9 is slidably mounted on the plate or frame 6 in the guides 8 and is designed to slide outwardly toward one side over the end opposite the stop 7 and when slid inwardly is adapted to strike or abut against the said stop so as to close the opening through the frame or plate. This cover 9 is preferably provided with a knob or foot piece 10 by means of which the cover may be readily slid open and closed.
A circular valve or disk 11 is arranged within the lower end of the chute 5 and has trunnions 13 projecting from opposite edges pivoted to the chute 5, the side 12 opposite the side to which the cover slides being thickened or weighted so that the valve when free will normally stand open or in a vertical plane at right angles to the path of the cover. The valve 11 is of a contour similar to the corresponding portion of the chute 5 and when swung horizontal closes the lower end of the chute and serves as a bottom therefor.
In order to swing the valve 11 closed when the cover 9 is slid open, a cord 14 of suitable wire or other fabric is attached to the weighted side 12 of the valve 11 and to the inner end of the cover 9 and is trained over a pulley or guide 15 mounted on the side of the chute 5 opposite the side to which the cover slides and directly under the floor plate. The cord 14: is slackened when the cover is closed, so that the valve 11 remains open, and when the cover is slid open, the upper end of the cord 14 will be drawn therewith, so as to draw the cord taut and swing the weighted side 12 of the valve upward in order to close the valve when the cover is open.
The lower extremity of the chute 5 is offset as designated by the numeral 16 so as to impair the upward passage of draft-s through the chute, particularly when the car or the conveyance is in motion.
This euspidor may therefore be set into the floor of steam and electric cars, steam boats, and other conveyances, so as to uneneumber the floor, and when the cover is slid open, the lower end of the chute will be closed so as to prevent upward drafts through the chute and into the car and to also prevent the discharge of the contents of the chute while the cover is in open posi tion. It will therefore follow, that the cover may bereadily opened by pushing the knob or foot piece 10 with the foot, so that the chute 5 may receive the excretions from the respiratory and digestive passages or receive waste papers, fruit skins, and other refuse. Then when it is desired to dis chargethe contents of the chute the cover 9 may be slid closed, in which event the cord 14 will be slackened so that the valve 11 will be opened. The contents will thus be discharged or ejected, and in this man ner, the cuspidor may be emptied at timely points while the car is in transit.
The present device provides for perfect sanitation, and does not encumber the floor space, or otherwise encumber the car or other conveyance.
This device is desirable for passenger coaches, or in fact all conveyances for carrying passengersand may be installed in a convenient, ready and eflicient manner With but little expense.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as neW is A cuspidor of the character indicated embodying an open floor plate, a chute depending therefrom, a cover for the plate and guided to slide open toward one side, a valve pivoted in the lower end of the chute to swing open in a plane at right angles to the path of the cover, the side of the valve opposite the side to which the cover slides being thickened so as to tend to swing the Valve open, a pulley mounted on the side of the chute opposite the side toward which the cover slides and directly under the floor plate, and a flexible member secured to the inner end of the cover and to the thickened side of the Valve and trained over the pulley.
