UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- FRANK R. DOMINGUEZ, OF EL BIO, CALIFORNIA.
IGNITION SYSTEM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK R. DOMINGUEZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Rio, in the county of Ventura, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Imprm'ements in Ignition Systems; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to ignition systems for internal combustion engines of the hit and miss type.
The invention resides in a novel switch one member of which is connected to the supporting block of one of the outside contacts of the engine, and the other memberof which is secured to the exhaust valve lever, both members being held apart during lifting of the exhaust valve during the time the engine is not taking fuel.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification :Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved switch shown applied to the valve and ignition mechanisms of a gas engine now in general use. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 2-2 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the switch members.
Referring now to the drawings in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates a block which is insulated from the valve box 11 and is secured thereto by bolts 12. Revolubly mounted on the block 10 is an electrode 13 which is provided with an outer arm 14 secured to the electrode by a clamp 15, the electrode being provided within the cylinder with an integral contact 16. A second electrode 17 is mounted on the valve box of the engine and carries on its outer end a swivel arm 18 which is pivotally secured to a continuously actuated rock link 19 which terminally engages the arm 14.
The above described parts are of ordinary construction and form no part of the present invention which rather resides in a novel switch assembled with the block 10 and ex haust valve lever 20, and which opens the circuit while the engine is not taking gas so that the continuously actuated rock link 19 will cause no spark within the cylinder Specification of Letters Patent.

and thus battery economy will be promoted. The switch comprises a member 22 which consists of a shank formed of a suitable length of metallic material, the lower end of the shank being bent at an angle relatively to the main body of the shank as shown at 23, and the opposite end of the shank being equipped with an eye 24 which receives one of the securing bolts 12 of the block 10. A set screw 25 is threaded through the shank and bears terminally against the box 11.
The mating member 20 of the switch consists of a substantially oblong block 27 of insulating material which is secured transversely across the edge of the exhaust lever by a U-shaped clamp 28 which straddles the exhaust lever, the legs of this clamp being inserted through suitable openings formed in the block 27 and retaining nuts 28 being advanced upon the legs and screwed up tight against the upper and lower faces of the block to rigidly anchor the latter in position. A metallic plate 29 is secured by screws or similar connectors 30 to the top face of the block, this block having an extension 31 formed on one edge, the extremity of which is bent at an angle to the main body of the extension as shown at 32 and is de signed for engagement with the bent extremity 23 of the member 22. The plate 27 is cut away centrally as shown at 33 so as to not contact with the U-shaped clamp 28. Arranged on the plate 29 diametrically op posite the extension 31 is a second extension 34; which is equipped with a set screw 35 and serves as a binding post for the battery wire 36.
Then the exhaust valve lever 20 is held so as to hold the exhaust valve open when the engine is not taking fuel, the bent tip 32 of the extension 31 will be moved out of engagement with the bent tip 25 of the member 22 so'that the circuit will be broken and thus a saving of the batteries promoted while the engine is not taking fuel. Upon the exhaust valve lever being returned to normal position the bent tips 32 and 25 will contact and the circuit be closed so that the normal action of the engine can take place.
What is claimed, is
-The combination with the exhaust valve lever and spark mechanism of an internal combustion engine of the hit and miss type,
of a switch including a member attached to just said second named member longitudisaid spark mechanism, a second member atnally upon said lever. 10 tached to said lever adapted to contact with In testimony whereof, I afiix my signathe first named member, an insulating block ture, in presence of tWo Witnesses.
