IMPROVEMENT IN RAKE ATTACHMENT PORBEAPERS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MELVIN C. CHAMBnnLm, of Plain View, in the county of Wabasha and in the State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gleaner or Rake Attachment for Reapers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification;

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a rake or gleaner to be attached to reapers or farm wagons, or to any vehicle, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the artto which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view, and

Figure 2 is a side view of my rake or gleaner attached to a reaper.

Figure 3 shows the manner of attaching it to the reaper.

A represents a beam of suitable dimensions, provided, on its upper side, with two standards, B B, through which passes a rod, 11, parallel with the beam.

On the rod a is placed a series of blocks, 7) b, held a suitable distance apart by means of other smaller blocks, d (I, through which the rod a also passes.

The rake-teeth f f are inserted in the under sides of the blocks I) b, and held by means of loops or staples, c, as shown in fig. 2.

In the upper ends of the standards B B a shaft, 0, has its bearings, which shaft is, at its inner end, provided with a crank, 1), outside of the inner standard.

Inside of this standard, on the same end of the shaft, is a small ratchet-wheel, g, in which gears a lever-pawl, 71, pivoted on the inside of the standard.

A bar, E, is attached, to the shaft 0, parallel with it, by means of pins or arms, 6 a, so that, by the use of the crank D, said bar can be made to bear down upon the front ends of the blocks b b, raising the teeth f j up how the ground, and holding them in this position by the pawl 71-, which prevents the shaft 0 from turning.

The inner end of the beam A is pivoted betweenbar will support the beam A.

The posts or standards G G are provided with several holes, through which the bolt that pivots the beam A may be placed, so as to adjust it at any height desired.

The rake or gleancr thus constructed may be attached to a reaper, a common fzuni- \vagon, or, in fact, to any vehicle moving on wheels, by fastening the bed-plate H firmly on the same.

Having thus fully described my invention,

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lettors Patent, is-

1. The shaft ,0, with crank D, pins or arms i i, bar E, ratchet-wheel g, and leverpawl 71-, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein. set forth.

2. The arrangement of the bar A, bed-plate H H,

posts or standards G G and I I, and the shouldered bar J, for thepurpose'of supporting the rake and attaching it to a reaper or a vehicle, substantially as herein set forth. 3. The combination and arrangement of the beam A, standards B B, rod a, rake b f, shaft 0, bar E, bedplate H, posts or standards G G and I I, and bar J, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
