IGNIIING ATTACHMENT FOR LAMPS.
Specification oi Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1912.
Application filed September 1, 1912. Serial No. 718,451.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. Yonno, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pelham, in the county of \Vestchcster and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Igniting Attachment for Lamps, 01 which the following is a specitication. I
This invention relates to an igniting, at tachment more particularly intended to light automobile lamps, the device being); so constructed that it can be readily attached to a conventional lamp burner, without requiring any fitting or alteration of the same.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a front View partly broken away of a lamp provided with my igniting attachment; Fig. 2 an enlarged longitudinal section of the igniting device on line 2 2, Fig. 4; Fig. 3 a side view thereof, and Fig. 42 a horizontal section.
The igniting attachment comprises essentially a plate or bracket 10, having a curved jaw 11,adapted to straddle the stem 19, of an acetylene or other burner 13. Opposite said jaw there is tapped into plate 10, a screw 14, which may be proje ted against said stem, so that the plate may be readily clamped in position at a suitable distan e below the burner.
.. Through an aperture 15 of plate 10, there extends loosely a vertically movable tubular stem 16, which normally descends by its own weight to its lowermost position. so as to be suspended from the plate ('lfiig. 2). The upper end of tube 16 is forked as at '17, and within the fork there is pivoted a milled onset-rated steel wheel 18. Within tube is there is contained a block of pyrophorous material 10, which frictic. all held against wheel 18 by a spring 20, u hieh bears with one end against said block, and with its othe;v end against. a threaded follower 21, tapped into the lower end of the, tube. Thus by turning the .lollower, theYpyrophorous block 19 will be spl'i11g-pressed against wheel 18, and may be raised from time to time when worn. in order to hold tube l6 from turning, it is,provided with a flattened ta 3 engaged by a set screw 23 tapped into plate 10.
ilio innite the burner,
tube 1.6 is raised to bring wheel 18 into horizontal alinement with burner 13. Wheel 18 is now given a quick turn by the finger, to friction against block 19 and thus produce a spark that will ignite the gas, after which the tube is released, to descend and resume its normal position, so that the sparking mechanism becomes distanced from the flame.
It will be seen that the igniting device can be readily coupled to a conventional burner without rei' uiring the latter to lie-in any way changed, and that it provides convenient means for lighting an automobile or similar lamp in a quick and convenient manner.
I claim:
1. An igniting attachment for lamps, comprising a bracket, adapted to be removably secured to a burner, a vertically movable tubular stem engaging the bracket, a pyrophorons block within the stem, and a wheel pivoted to said stem, and adapted to frictionally engage said block.
2. An igniting attachment for lamps, comprising a bracket adapted to be removably secured to a burner, a vertically movable tubular stem engaging the bracket, a pyrophorous block within the stem, a siring engaging the block. a follower tappet into the block and engaging the spring, and a wheel pivoted to the stem and adapted to frictionally engage the block.
3. An igniting attachment for lamps, comprising; a bracket having a curved jaw adapted to straddlea burner, a set screw tapped into the bracket and adapted to hold the burner against Enid jaw, a stem vertically movable in the bracket, and a sparking device carried by the stem.
1-. An igniting attachment for lamps,c0m prising a bracket having a curved jaw adapted to straddle a burner, a set screw tapped into the bracket and adapted to hold the burner against said jaw, a stem vertiealiy movable in the bracket and having a tint face, an additional screw tapped into the block and engaging said lace, and a sparking device carried by the stem.
