To all 1li/0m it l)nay concern.'
Be it known that l., AUSTIN EL Surinam LAND, u citizen of the lUnited States, resid-` ing at' Des Moines, in the county of Polk and VState of iowa, have invented a, ceri-ein new and useful Closet-Fluslnng Device, o'l'` which the following 1s u specification.
My invention relates to 'that class of closet flushing devices in which n slow closing Valve is employed, -which vulve is operated .to close' by thepressure of water within the .device, und which is operated to open byl manually opening e valve to relieve the we'- 'ter pressure that' tends to close the main vulve.
for purposesiof repair or adjustment.
4A. further object is to provide a device of this kind in which the expansion chamber is exposed on all sides so that the operator may detect leaks therein und in which the said expansion chamber and connected parts .may be readily und easily removed or rcplnced. A
el further object is to provide o bypass leading from the intel@ to the expensiheir vi ded rin ed i; sur ly opened so the unter muy out any obstructions in the vulve sont.
y invention consists n tue :irruiigeulei und con parts olE 'the device wneiciy the tenipluted ure ntluiocd, :is llor netter more lully set loi-th, gmini. out in my oluim, und illustrated in the uocouipunying drawings, in which construction, "fie various liigure l shows n central, sectional View through e closet llushing device embodying my inveifltion Wig. 2 shows vu side Veleva.- 'lion of e. cc et ihn-him device embriidying :ny luventior edge view 0;.' :z

Patented Dee. 24, 1912,
ytrike pipe is provided at its upper end with n valve seat 11, and below the vulve seat there is a pipe l2 communicating with the intake pipe to serve the purpose of o bypass. In this pipe 12 is u valve chamber L3 having a screw-valve li to engage the vulve sent thereof so that the vulve muy be readily and easily adjusted by hand toward and from the valve 'seat to thereby regulate the passageway through the bypass and thus cont-rol the flow of Water through the byl pass. The said by-pass pipe 12 communicakes et its upper end with a Water chamber 15, which chamber is provided with e valve sent 16 and with n passe ew'ay 17 leading to the discharge pipe 18, W )ich discharge` pipe also communicates by means of u passage 10'l with the upper end of the intake pipe 10. I have provided u vulve 19 for the valve seat 16, fixed to o vertically movable 'valve is normally in engagement with the lower end of the valve stem 20, und limiting stops 25 ore provided for the Suid arm 24s Obviously, the bundle may be manipulated .i i9 above its sont nd the 3 il, uiteiith* The seid "vulve l ser lensng the pi-er..-;u\;'e.ol l l 'thin zeewater chuulher i5 und, therefore, is; iioreizfmiftcr referred to :is u relief valve.
ivlounted on the valve scot 1.1 is the {lushingn vulve F353 conuecled to the vulve which fgwie'uds tlxroulfgh e screw pl.; vided with u smiling; box 29. it :ipp end oi' the Juive stern 27 is u dish Zit", sind connected with the disk 30 is u cylindrical, -expensible witter chamber 31 liuving its sides made ol' resilient sheet metal provided with annuler corrugutions. The upper end of the sheet metal is connected to a, stationery disk 3Q which is provided with u passugewuy 3 communicating with the inte. rior oi' tile chamber l5. Ilhe corrugated, resilient sides me designed to serve the purpose of normally holding the disk 3l) in un elevated position to retain the vulve 26 above in" seat, und when water under pressure is admitted into the interior of the expercibir, cliuznbei', it will press downwurdlv ina CII
upon the disk 30 with suiiicient force to lirinly hold the Valve 2G to its seat against the upward pressure of Water upon the valve 26 Within the intake pipe 10.
ln practical operation, and assuming that the intake pipe l0 is connected With a source of Water supply under pressure, then, obviously, the Water will iiow upwardly through the opening at the top of the pipe l0 into the discharge pipe 18 and also through the vtay-pass l2.. As soon as the Water iiowing through' the by-pass 12 fills the expansible chamber 31, then, on accountl o'4 the large area. of the disk 30, the pressure Within the expansible chamber-will cause the disk 30 to be lowered and the Valve 26 closed. The pressure or" Water Within the expansiblechamber will tend to hold said Valve firmly against its seat to prevent leak age.
'Assuming that. it is desired .to flush a closet connected with the discharge pipe 18, the operator grasps the handle 23, and by manipulating' it causes the Valve 19 to he elevated from its valve seat thus relieving thewater pressure Within the chamber l5 and Within the expansihl'e chamber because the water can iioW out through the opening 17 much more rapidly than it can iow through the bypass- As soon as the Water pressure is relieved, the pressure upwardly of the Water upon the valve 26 will tend to open it and permit the Water tofiow in large volume into the discharge pipe 18. The re-v siliency of the sides 31 of the eXpansihle chamber Will also tend to hold the valve 26 elevated. As soon as the handle 23 is rei leased, the relief valve 19 will loe closed 'by its spring and the water drawing-.through the ley-pass Will slowly closetheushing Vaive.
One or" the important advantages of my invention is that a bypass is provided of comparatively large area so that it cannot bee-orne clogged by particles of rust or scale or the like and the quantity or" Water iiowing through it may be regulated and controlled by meansi'of the screw-Valve lli, and
in the event that any foreign substances should become lodged between the yalve 14 and its'seat, the operator may readily and easily open the valve suiiicicntly to] permit the water iowing through the Valve; seat to clean out any such foreign matter, Whereupon the valve 14. may oe again carefully readjusted. This may be done, obviously, Without taking apart any oit' the pipes or ittings of the device. Furthermore, by having an expansi'oie chamber directly connected with thestein of the iiushing valve, friction and Wearupon the parts are vminimized and sufiieient pressure may he applied to theushing valve by the Water to irrnly hold it to its seat. l
y An expansiole chamber of .the kind herein shown and descrihed is not likely to become broken or Worn out, and, hence, should .last a' longtime vwithout repair or adjustment.
vFurthermore, by having an enpansihle chamber or this kind formed with corrugated, sheet metal sides, l dispense with all v packing devices oririction joints.
i claire. as my invention: v
Ina device of the classv described, the combination of a body portion east complete in one piece and comprising an intake pipe having. a 'valve seat at itstop, a passages way eorninunicatingl with. the upper end o the intake pipe, a discharge pipe communieating with said passageway, and a Water.
chamber at the top of the casting spaced above said passageway and communicating with. the discharge pipe, at one-side ofthe 'casting a valve seat between the water chamber and the discharge-pipe, a seres;I
plug in the top of the said passageway above the valwfseat in the intake pipe, an expans'ilole chamber having itsf'upper end secured to the Water charnher and communin eating therewith, a salire stein iixed to the lower part oi the eapansiioiechamber and extended through said screw plug, a valve on'tlie lower enti of the valve stern. designed rto coact. with the ralve seat on top pif'the intake pipe, a loyfpass communicating with the intake pipe below the Valve seat there in and communicating with the Water ehember lat the 'bop o" the casting, an adjustable reducing ral-re in said hy-pass, a springclosedy valve on the valve seat between the Water chamber and. thediseharge pipe, and means for manually opening said valve.
