EDWARD LINDEN BAY, OF AGENCY, IOWA."
HANDLE-FASTENING non PICKS AND ornnn TOOLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Agency, in the county of Wapello and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handle-Fastenings for Picks and other Tools, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description of thesame, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference markedthereon.
My invention relates to fastenin'gs for the handles of picks and other tools presenting like conditions of structure and use, and my object is to provide a detachable fastening which while simple and readily and quickly operable, will securely unite tool and handle;
' and to this end myinvention consists in the tool handle fastening constructed substantially as hereinafter specified.
In the drawings-Figure 1' is a perspective view of a pick handle fastening embodying my invention;'the handle and pick being shown separated; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, but with the parts connected.
I show my invention applied to the case of a .pick because it isespecially adapted thereto, and in the drawing the pick 10is of usual general form." Instead of the usual eye, there is provided a dove-tail slot 11 that widens from its outer end inward, that receives a correspondingly shaped head 12 on a bolt 18 applied to a handle head or socket 14 which is preferably of cast metal, and to which the'usual wooden, handle is applied. It will be observed that the-bolt head is wholly within the body of the pick so that objectionable projection of the bolt head beyond the surface of the pick where it is apt to strike against objects and be worn or injured, is avoided and there are no recesses or cavities in the pick unfilled that tend to weakenthe pick, but the slot 11 is wholly occupied or filled by the bolt head 12 so that. a rigid, solid structure results.
The shank of the bolt 13 passes through a holein the head 14, and emerges into a slot or chamber 15 formed in the head at the Patented Dec.24,-1912. I I Application filed March 12, 1912. Seria1 1 To. 683,281. W
rear. end of the hole,'for the accommodation of/ a nut 16, and a turning tool therefor. The contacting sides of pick slot 11 and bolt.
head12 are flat and hence oppose any turning tendency of the pick on its handle, but preferably, the handle head His provided on its face next the pick with lugsor'dowel pins 17 on opposite sides of thebolt, which enter holes 18 in the pick and thus the connection is stiffened. The rigidity and security'of the fasteningis also increased by providing the bolt with a square shoulder 19' that fits a slot or depression with flat sides in the head 14. r i
It willbe seen that the work of assemblage and separation of the parts is ;very
simple, since it involves little more than turning the nut.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is-.
A fastening for tool handles, comprisingv a dove-tailed slot in the tool,,that opens out to oneside of the tool, the tool being solid from the wider endof the slot to 'the outer face of thetool, a handle member, a bolt having a flaring head that engages said slot,the contactingsides of the head and slot being flat, a handle member having, a
hole through which the bolt passes and a chamber at the inner end of the hole, the hole being wholly within the bodv of the handlemember, a nut on the bolt where it extends into said chamber, coactingdowel pins and holes, on the tool and handle member above and below'the bolt head, and. a
shoulder at'the narrow end of the bolt head I fitting a depression in the handle member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
