' "speeifieation of Letters Patent. l
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. Foss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of -Portland, in theicounty of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain f lclined surface which 1 engages with the innew and useful `Improvements in Door- Holders, of which the followingy is a specification.
My invention relates to a door stop for fastener such as are used to hold a 'door open in any desired position, and theobject kof my invention is to construct a door stop which will be simple in construction and which may be both set and released by a pressure of the foot.y
With these objects in view, my invention consists of the combination and arrangement of claimed.
My invention may best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a part vertical section of my device in position, on a door, Fig. 2 is a part vertical section on the line "y y of Fig. `1, Fig. 3 is a horizontal section onthe line of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the foot piece showing a modified construction.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the door and B is a suitable casing inclosingV the part-s and adapted tobe secured to the parts hereinafter described and t lower portion of the door. Slidably mountedin the casing B is a vertically disposed bolt C having an offset foot piece c on its lower end with a yielding plug c. The bolt has a ratchet o2 on one of its faces yand it is provided with a spring'to'lift or release it when it is not in operation.y v
As here shown, the bolt is-hollowed out to receive a spring d which acts against a stop d in .the casing and the top of the recess in the bolt. The spring d tends at all times to lift the bolt c. The bolt is held down byk a spring pressed pawl which engages the ratchet and is released by' a tripping device so located as to be. actuated by a downward pressure of the foot.
As here shown, a pawl e is pivoted at c adjacent to the bolt C and it has an upward extending arm'e2 having on its upper 4end an inclined surface. A spring c3 presses the y pawl into engagement with the ratchet. The
f and a spiraly spring g tends to force it upward` at allv times. f
clined surface of the upper armof the pawl Vand when the boltfis pressed downward' ythe action of these two inclined surfaces is to throw over the pawl arm c? yand disen-` gage kthe pawl. f'
t y Patented Dec.24, 1912.v Applieationmearunekzs,1912. Ysum1 N0.`,7os,61`s.w f f foot may be placed` `whenit is` desired *toy release the bolt.' Y. The bolt has a stop or collar t When the device is to be used, it is secured to the lower portion of the door. The door may then be secured in any desired position by placing the foot on the offset foot piece o and pressing it down onto the floor. The pawl e will automatically engage the ratchet Vand hold the bolt down. To yrelease. the
ratchet it is only necessary to place the foot on the upper end of the bolt f which releases the pawl and allows the bolt to fiy up and rey lease the door.
They releasing device maybe yotherwise constructed than as here shown but itis important that it shall be so connected that it may be acted upon by a 'motion of the' foot, preferably downward. w
Instead of the footpiece shown in Figs. and 2, I may use yone as illustrated in Fig. 4
in which C represents theL socketon they lower 'end of the bolt, c3 a sleeve fittingk therein and capable of longitudinaly movement in the socket. Vertical slots c5 are cut in opposite sides of the socket andr through this slot a rivet c6 passes throughthe sleeve to secure it in place while allowing a limited amount of vertical motion.
A rubber plug o2 is secured in the lower end ofthe sleeve by a rivet c7 and the sleeve .and plug are forced normally downward by a spiral spring c4V which bears on a disk c8v on the upper end of the plug.
The spring is of considerable length since it comes inside of the sleeve c3 and there is a corresponding amount of resiliency. A foot piece thus constructed has a considerable amount ofcompression and is not dependent on the resiliency of the rubber tip.
I claim l. A door holder comprising la casing, a
bolt having a ratchet andan offset foot piece, said bolt being vertically slidable in said casing, a spring for lifting said bolt, a
spring pressed pawl for engaging said ratchet and a longitudinally slidable tripping bolt for engaging and releasing said pawl extending through the top of said casing.
2. A door holder comprising a easing, a bolt having a ratchet and an oset foot piece, said lbolt being vertically slidable in said casing, a spring for lifting said bolt, a spring pressed pawl for engaging said ratchet having an upward extending arm provided with an inclined surface, a tripping bolt extending through the top of the casing and having an inclined surface engaging the inclined surface of said pawl and a spring for lifting said tripping bolt.
3. A door holder comprising a casing, a bolt having a ratchet and an offset foot piece, said bolt being vertically slidable in said casing, a spring for lifting said bolt, a spring pressed pivoted pawl for engaging said ratchet, said pawl having an inclined surface above the pivoting point, a vertically disposed tripping bolt extending through the top of the casing and having on its lower end an inclined surface engaging the inclined surface of said pawl and a spring for lifting said tripping bolt.
In testimony whereof I have aiiixed my signature, 1n presence of two witnesses.
