BRIDLB BIT.`
PN0J1104`,793. Patented Junel 2s, 1870.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters P atent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. THOMPSON, of Mount Sterling, in the 'county of Montgomery and State of Xentuck have invented Ia new and improved Bridleit; and Ido` hereby 'declare that the following is a iil, clear, and exact description of the same, refer- Lence. being had to the accompanying drawing for'rning a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Figure 2 is a plan view.
rThis invention consists in the combination of two bits, one passing through@J slot made nearly centrally of the other, the twoibits'lieing bound rtogether by straps, in such manner that one' may slide upon the other, andthe joint hit be elongated by drawing the bridle-rein rings, one'of which is at the extremity of oneA of the bits, and the other of which is at the 'oppesite extremity-of the other bit, away fromeach other, so as to increase the leverage of the bit upon the horses mouth, while, at the same time, the curbreiu rings and cheek-pieces-are drawn toward each other, and compressedftightly against the'horses cheeks, by'whieh means'an unruly animal ispthe more easily controlled. e i
In the drawing-k l p a b arethe two hits.v
c, the slot in the bit e, through which passes the bit b. i
d' d, the bridle-rein rings. 1. i, the cheek-pieces, which are attached to theA opposite extremity of each bit from that where the bridle-rein ring is connected.
e e, straps or loops binding the two bits together.
h h, the cheek-line rings.
On pulling the two-bridle-rein rings in opposite directions, the two bits slide, one upon the. other, and. the bit is elongated. At the same time the cheek-A pieces are drawn toward each other, and severely gripe the cheeks of the animal on whose head the bridle is placed.
The lengthening of the'bit enables the driver to exert an increased. force on one or the other side ot' the horses month by reason of the greater leverage.
' By this bit, therefore, it is conidentl;I asserted, the most headstrong of qnadifupedsjny' be speedily reduced -to obedience.
A.Having thus described myY invention,
What I claim 'as' new, and desire .to secure by Letters Patent, is l 1. The bit a, profvided with the slot c, in combination" with the bit b, passing through such slot, andthe straps c, as and for the purpose described.A
2; The combination of the bits a b and straps e with the cheek-pieces t and bridle-rein rings (1,- in the manner and for the purpose specified.
' HENRY C. THOMPSON.
