' 1 ARnr1dLIssMANoF KENNEDY, rNDIANAQ VALVE-GEAR. v
i Specification of Letters Patent.
Be it known that I, 'HARRY J1 GLrssMmv,
"acit-izen of the United States, residingk at `Kennedy, in the county of Dearborn yand State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Gears, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.- f
This invention relates to i an improved valve gear and has Vfor its object the provision of a simplified and eiiicient connection between the movingparts of the engine and the cut-ofi' valve whereby the usual eccentric is dispensed with.` f
The invention, as hereinafter particularly claimed will be readily understood from the following detailed description based upon thev accompanying schematic drawings wherein is illustrated a. preferred embodiment of the invention in a conventional showing of a reciprocating steam engine.
vIn these drawings Figure 1 is a sideelevation partly in section; and Fig. 2 is a top plan View.
Corresponding and like parts'are referred to in the following description and designated in the accompanying drawings by like reference characters. f vy Thev reference numeral 1 designates th cylinder within whichlthe piston 2 reciprocates, the supply of live steam to the cylinder being through the inlet ports y3 whilel the exhaust therefrom is through the port 4 of the steam chest 5 which is supplied from `the boiler by connections not shown', and
containsa cut-0E slide valve 6 arranged to control said ports in theusual manner.
The connecting rod 9, and the drive crank pulley 10 are of the usual type and of themselves form no part of they presentv invention.
Upon the engine fra-me 11 is'mounted a suity able support 12 carrying a boxingl 18 within which is journaled a rock shaft 14 Vcarrying at one end a rockerarm 15 `which has in its opposite end a slot 16 engaging a vpin 17 fixed in the cross head. The rock shaft 14 has upon its opposite end a second rocker carried by the engine frame.- Therock shaft 21 vhas. upon its opposite end an` arm 23 conpiston rod 7, the cross head 8, the-f I l by a link 24 with the valve rod v25 at 26. Y f
The operation of the device is as follows: Duringthe reciprocation of the-cross head 8, the shaft 1'4`is rocked by means of the arm 15 and said rocking motion is transmitted by means of the arm 18, the link-19 and the arm 20 to the rock shaft l21 and by it in turn y Patented 1360,17, 1912. l Applicatigonpled March '21, '1912. "QSKerial Nc.,685,249. y l y STATES PATENTOFHGE if transmitted by means of the arm`23 and the l link 24 to the valve rod 25, .wherebyV the f two endsv of the cylinder, alternately,.in f
cut-off valve 6 is -reciprocatedto pla-ce ythe communication with theinlet and exhaust ports.
' yIt will thus be seen that I have devised a v simple and eflicient valve gear which is certain in it-s action and not liable to getv out of adjustment. f
Having thus described rmy invention, `I claim;
1.k In combination with a cylinder, of a piston mounted for reciprocation therein, a
frame connected to said cylinder, af ycross:
head-mounted within said frame, mea-ns con`k necting'said cross head with said piston, a
cut ofi' valve mounted within said cylinder,
a valve stem extending from said valve, a Y
support mounted upon said frame, a: rock shaft mounted within said support, an arm extending from one extremity -of said rock shaft and having a verticallyextending slot formedrin'- its opposite end, a pin extending from one of the lateral sides of said cross y head and 5 adapted to operate within ksaid slot, a boxing carried by said frame, a rock f shaft mounted in said boxing below thev first mentioned rock shaft, a link connecting said rock shafts, an arm extending from said'second mentionedrock shaft anda link con-v l nectingsaid arm with said valvefsternv sub- .p n
stantially as described.`
2. kIn combination with the cylinder, of the piston mounted for reciprocation `there-y in,k a frame connected with lsaid cylinder, a cross head mounted f within said frame, a
pistonrod connecting saidpiston with said cross head, a pin 'extending laterally froml said crossr head and drive-shaft mounted in one extremity of said frame, a rod connectf ing said pin with said drive-shaft, a support mounted upon said frame, arock shaft journaled therein, an arm dependingfrom said rock shaft, a lower extremity of said arm being provided with an'elongatedslot` for n receiving said pin mounted on the cross With the last mentioned rock shaft, substanhead, e second rock shaft mounted upon said tially as and for the purpose described. 10V
frame, a. link connecting both of the said In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my rook shafts, a Valve mounted Within said signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
cylinder, e stem extending from said valve, HARRY J. GLIS'SMAN. a bearing mounted upon said support for Witnesses:
receiving the inner end of said stem, and a THOMAS VAUGHAN,
link connecting one end of said Valve stem JOHN GLISSMAN.
