UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDSON DOE, OF SOUTH NEVVBURY, VERMONT.
JOINTED LINK FOR ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,485, dated September 21 1886.
Application filed February 4, 1886. Serial No. 190,874. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
. Be it known that I, EDsoN DOE, of South Newbury, in the county of Orange and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jointed Links for Engines, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact ment, shown as applied to the crank-shafts of the pistourod and valve stem of an engine. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a part of the same. Fig. 3 isan elevation of the jointed link, showing the reverse side. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of the upper part of the link and the annular part of the joint. Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation of the lower part of the link, and showing the circular part of the joint in edge View.
The object of this invention is to provide jointed links for engines constructed in such a manner as to give a perfect lead and cut-off on both forward and back motion, each eccentric working independently of the other, and one part of the link being thus prevented from affecting the movement of the other part.
The invention consists in the combination, with the crank -shaft of an engine, the eccentrics attached thereto and their eccentricrods, and the crank-shaft connected with the valvesteln, of the jointed link and its holding-bar, as will be hereinafterfully described.
A represents a steam-cylinder; B, the piston; O, the piston-rod, and D the crank-shaft of a steam-engine. Erepresents the steamchest; F, the valve; G, the valve-stem, and H the crank-shaft that operates the said valve.
All of these parts are constructed and operate in the ordinary manner. The valve-stem G is connected with the upper crank-arm, I, of the shaft H, and upon the crank-pin of the lower crank-arm, J, of the said shaft is placed a square bearing block, K, which slides in the slot'of the link. The link is made in two parts, L M, which are curved in the manner of an ordinarysolid link. The lower end of the upper part, L, of the link is secured by bolts or rivets to the upper part of the annular plate N,which. forms .a part ofthe linkjoint. The annular plate N is made in two parts with flanges upon their ends to receive the bolts by means of which the said parts are secured to each other. In the concave edge of the annular plate N is formed an annular groove, 0, to receive the annular rib P, formed upon the edge of the circular plate Q, which forms the other part of the linkjoint, and to which the upper end of the lower part, M, of the link is secured by bolts or rivets. Upon the outer parts of the concave edges of the parts L M of the link are formed lugs to which arepivoted the ends of the bars R S. The other ends of the bars R S are connected by straps or other suitable means with the eccentrics T U, attached to the shaft D, with the crank V of which the piston-rod O is connected. 'To the center of the circular plate Q is attached or upon it is formed a pin, W, to which is pivoted the end of a bar, X, the other end ofwhich is connected with the shaft D by a strap or other suitable coupling, so as to hold the link always at the same distance from the said shaft D. To the center'pin, WV, is also pivoted the lower end of the short connecting-bar Y, the other end of which is pivoted to the end of an arm of the elbow-lever Z. To the other arm of the elbow-lever Z is pivoted the end of a rod, 0, which extends into such a position that it can be readily reached andoperated by the engineer to reverse the motion or to cut off the steam at any desired point of the stroke. With this construction the movements of the two parts of the link will be independentof each other, so that the forward movement of one part will not be affected by the back movement of the other part, and the lead will be the same on both sides of the valve.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An improved link for engines, consisting of an upper part provided with an annular grooved plate and a lower part provided with an annular ribbed plate fitting in the rib P and pin W, substantially as herein said grooved plate, substantially as herein shown and described. shown and described.
2. A link for engines, consisting of the up- EDSON 5 per part, L, provided with apertured plate N, Vitnesses:
having annular groove 0, and the lower part, L. B. OWEN,
M, provided with the plate Q, having annular H M. BAILEY.
