APPLICATION FILED MAR. 21, 1911.

l @mum/hoz @wmew UNITED STATES PATENT oFFioE;
"'REUBEN L. Hom/[Amor s'rocKToN, CALIFORNIA,y AssIGNonTo E. E. Gnoss, ork
s'iocK'roN, CALIFORNIA.
To cZZ 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN L. IfIoLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin,
State of California, have invented certain n new and useful Improvements in Vhistles;
and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others rskilled in the art to which it appertains to'make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in whistles of all kinds and particularly to compressed air whistles used for boats, launches and similar conveyances, the object of the invention being to produce a whistle in which an invariable sound can be produced regardless; of the amount of air pressure'and t also one in which the resounding bell can be adjusted at suoli a point as will give the ydesired sound or such invariable one as will be most effectual.
,. A further objectof the invention is to` Q produce a simple and inexpensivedevice and f yet one which will be exceedingly eEective for the purposes for whichV it is designed.
sok
These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fullyfappear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the com-l plete whistle. Fig. 2 is afsectional view of .the upper portion .of the whistle showing the resounding bell and supporting cup. l
Referring now more-,particularly to the] i 'sleeve 5 threaded into which is thefair defleeting cup 9 having a central recess p8,
there being a threadednipple 6 screwed into the member 9 and having a port 7 adapted to register with the port L On the upper j Specification' of LettersPateiit. Patented Dec. 17,1912. Application filed March 21, 1911;
Serial No. 615,949.
end of the nipple is a cross head 7 disr` posed in the recess 8 and having itsy sides spaced apart, the sides of said recess 8 forming a small air escape channel 10 while `11 are small passagesleading from the port 7 into said channel 10.
Secured to the top of the cup ,9 isa cage 12 holding a collar 13 into whichprojects the resounding bell or drum 14 t-he lower edge 15 of said member 14 being structure does away with center posts forL supporting the bell whichk are now used and which cause the sound to be diminished g'.
and,ffurthermore, 'with a fixed bell havingy I such position, the sound of the whistle is often diminished according to the diminish-V ing of the air pressure which gives avariable sound which is a' great detriment when the whistles are used on boats or launches where a similarity to each whistle is veryl essential in order to properly give signalsy 'i etc.
From the foregoing description it will readily appear that Ifhave produced such a whistlefas substantially fulfils the objects of the inventionfas set forth'herein,
While Athis,specification sets forth indetail the present andv preferred construction of kthe device, still in practice'such deviations from suchjdetail maybe resorted to as do not form a` departurefrom the spirit of theinvention. y j f invention what Having thus described my I- claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
vA device of the character described com prising ka pipe,-a `threaded sleeve on the upper end offsaid pipe, a cuphaving a screw threaded portion mounted in said sleeve,
saidy cuphaving a centralvthreaded orifice, y
a threaded nipple lscrewed into'said threaded orifice vand having a central orifice adapted v to register with said pipe, a cross-head on said beveled edge being disposed in direct said nipple, the sides of said cross-head bealinement with said air space, as described. 10
ing spaced from the sides of said cup form- In testimony whereof I affix my signature 'ing an air space, a plurality of ports in said in presence of two Witnesses.
cross-head communicating from the orifice REUBEN L. HOLMAN. in said nipple to said air space, an inverted Witnesses:
bell adjustably mounted 0n said cup and J osHUA B. VEBSTER,
having a beveled lower edge, the point of FRANK HjCARTER.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
