DETONATING ALARM. APPLICATION FILED F3117, 1912 1,047,778. Patent e d Dec. 17, 1912.
HUG-H 4. FORD, or cnAaLo'rrEsv IL n, VIRGINIA.
. DETONATING ALARM.
Specification of Letters Patent. v Patented Dec, 1'7, 191 2, 7
Application filed February 17, 1912. Serial No. 678,233.
lb all whom it may concern Be. it known that I, HUGHA. F0121), a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlottesville, in the county of Albemarle and State of Virginia, have "invented new and useful Improvements in Detonating' Alarms, v of which thefollowing is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a device for giving an alarm in case of fire. The invention embodies, among other features, a device which is adapted to be mount- "ed within a dwelling or other structure, the
said device being provided with a casing which will be released when subjected to heatv to expose a cartridge adapted to explode when the heat of the fire becomes sufficiently intense.
In the further disclosure of the invention,
reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 1s a perspective view of the device, showing the same in applied position.
Fig. 2 is a front elevationshowing the casing removed. Fig. 3 is avertical sectional view taken on the line 33 in Fig.1. I Fig. v
4: is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 1-4 in Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the views,
use is made of a cap provided with an upwardly extending apertured flange 11, the
mentioned cap being provided with antinclined downwardly extending edge 12 to produce a frusto-conically shaped. Secured to the under side of the cap 10 is a retaining member 13, preferably a wire or the like, the lower end of the said retaining member being adapted to project through an aperture 14 formed in the lower end of the casing and having the upper end thereof inclosing theinclined edge 12'of the cap 10,
the lower end of the retaining member 13 being soldered to the exterior side of the casing 15 after the retaininginember has,
. been passed through the aperture 14 thereof as shown in the views. ,Rigidly secured to the retaining member 13, within thecasing 15, by a band 16, is a cartridge 17. y r
In the use of the device anail is passed through the aperture in the flange 11 with the pointed end of the nail inserted in the wall of a building to support the cap 10, thecasing 15 being heldinengagement with the cap 10 by the retaining member'13 having the lower endthereof passed through the aperture 1 1 and securedto the exterior side of the casing by 'means of suitable solder. If the fire should occur ina building near where the device is mounted, when the heat.
becomes sufficiently intense, the solder securing the retaining member to the casing will be melted, thus causing the casing to fall to the floor and expose the cartridge 17 said cartridge being then exploded by. the action of the heat of the fire, thus alarming the inmates of the house, to inform them of their apparent danger.
The can 10 is preferably made of an integral piece of stamped material and the casing 15can likewise be stamped from an integral piece of material so that the entire device can be made very cheaply and easily to produce thedesired result, thus presenting an efficient commercial article.
I claim c 1. In a device of the class described the combination with a cap, of a retaining member secured thereto and depending therefrom, a casing, a fusible connection between the said casing and the said retaining member for normally retaining the casing in engagement with the said cap and a car-' I tridge mounted within the said casing and secured to the said retaining member.
2. As an article of manufacture, a cap,
means for supporting the cap, a retaining member mounted to depend from the said cap,'a casing, a fusible connection between the said casing and the said retaining memher, a cartridge mounted within the said casing and a band mounted to encircle the said cartridge and said retaining member to retain said cartridge in rigid positionwithin the casing.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
