The machine in general comprises a plurality of setting levers one for each denomination which are dillerentially adjustable over a scale. The adjustment of these to position a set of printing wheels. Mechanism is provided for supporting a sale slip and for giving the slip an impression of the amount from the printing wheels. The slip is then fed farther into the machine and a. second impression made on another part of the slip. A knife serves to sever the part bearing the first im 'n'cssion which is retained in the machine and the part bearing the second impression is then fed back out of the machine. I have added to this mcchanisn'x an auxiliary printing device bearing a, number or the date or any desired matter and this printingdevice is normally disconnected from the main operating mechanism of the machine. A testing device is provided which at each operation is moved to a position adja ent the slip carrying table. It a long bundle slip is in position on the table the testing device will be stopped and will serve to connect the operating d wice to the auxiliary printing mechanism. If however no such long slip has been placed on the table the auxiliary printing mechanism will not he so connected and will remain inoperative.

The cam groove 26 in the cam disk 25 is so shaped that at this time the friction roller 21 will be rocked upwardly thereby retracting the rack bar 30. This retraction evidently will rotate the feed roller and feed the slip to the left as shown in Fig. l. A second impression is then taken on theslip due to the high part 38 of the cam groove 24 and thereafter the feed roller 32 is revcrscly rotated to feed the slip out of the machine. During the last part of the rotation of the shaft the slip table is rocked to its normal downward position. A pivoted arm 77 is journaled on the pin which supports the anti-friction roller 59 and which is carried by the slide roller 58.

If however no slip has. been placed on the table the projection 73 will not be stopped but will be allowed to pass some distance into the slot 74. The length of the arm is such that the pad will ink the type of the printing device 81. Connected to the arm 94- is a second arm 96 Wl'llCll depends in front of an anti-friction roller 97 carried on-the supporting arm 80. The arm 94: has also a projection 98 which is adapted to be engaged by-a latch 99, this latch being pivoted at 100 and drawn normally in one direction by a spring 101. The latch 90 has an arm 102 pro ecting at right angles therefrom over the anti-friction roller 97. \Vhen the arm is rocked around its pivot 68 the anti-triti't'ion roller 97 will engage the depending arm 96 and rock the inking arm S t to the position shown in Fig, 2". The arm is hold in this position by the latch 99 which under the tension of its spring 101 mores in front of the projection 98 of the arm lit. When the arm 80 returns to its normal vertical position the anti-friction roller 97 will engage theright angle extension 102 of the latch 99 and rock it against the tension of the spring 101 around its piv t 100. This will withdraw the latch 99 from in trout ol the projection 98 and the spring 'lOl will then depress the ink pad carrying the arm 94- to the position shown in Fig. 2".

In a machine of the class described, the combination with a plurality of type carriers, a movable table for supporting a slip, an operating mechanism for moving the table to take an impression.upon the slip from one of the type carriers, and a testing device operated by the operating mechanism and working in conjunction with the slip for connecting another of the type carriers tothe operating mechanism so that the latter type carrier may be actuated thereby, to impress a character upon the slip.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with an operating mechanism, of a printing couple the members of which are normally separated, means for bringing the members of the couple together to impress upon a slip any suitable data, the said means being normally disconnected from the operating mechanism, and a device operated bythe operating mechanism for testing the presence of the slip, which device controls the connection to the operating mechansm of the means for bringing the members of the couple together.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with an operating mechanism, of a printing couple the members of which are nm-mally separated, a device ac-' tuated by the operating mechanism for testing the presence of an article to be marked by the printing couple, and means connected to the testing device and movable independently thereof by the operating mecha nism for bringing the members of the printing couple together when the article is present so as to mark said article.

In a cash register, the 'COI'IlbllltttlOD. with a main printing device, of an auxiliary printing device in, close proximity thereto, both printing devices adapted to print upon a paper slip of suflicient length to be engaged thereby, and Ineans for disabling the auxiliary printing device when themachine is operated in connection with a slip of insutiicicnt length.
In a machineof the class described, the combination with a main printing mechanism, of an auxiliary printing mechanism, and means, controlled by the length of the article to be printed upon, for operably connecting the auxiliary printing mechanism with the main printing mechanism.
30. Ina machine of the class described, the combination with a main printing mechanism, of an auxiliary printing mechanism, and means controlled by the position of the strip to be printed upon by themain printing mechanism, for determining whether the auxiliary printing mechanism will be operated.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with a main printing mechanism and an auxiliary printing mechanism, adapted to simultaneously print respectively upon the two ends of a slip, or" means for feeding the slip so that the main printing mechanism may print intermediate .the previously iirinted parts of the slip, the auxiliaryprinting mechanism rendered inoperative by the feeding inci ement of the slip.
