'Be it known that We, ANTHQNY J. Yohonns'r and LAWRENCE G. Yooonnsr, citinens ont the United States,residing` at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Ripe-Cleaner, of which the following is a specification. 4

, and to provide a simple, efficient and inexterior ta pcrcd 'stri'ictions in a pipe described, illustrated without departing from sligh tly greater diameter ,pensive device, designed for removing ob structions from sewer pipes, closets, sinks, drain, water and other pipes, and equipped with the ordinary rubber cup of such de. vices, and capable of readily removing o-b- .without breaking the '.he perriibber cup or splashing water over son using the pipe cleaner;l
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combinatioi'i ot parts hereinafter fully in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto ap icnded; it being understood that various c anges in the form, proportion, size and minor details otconstruction, within the scope ot the claims, may be resorted to the spiritv or sacricing any of the advantages of the invention'.

In the accoii'ipanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred,embodiment ot the invention, the pipe cleaner comprises in its construction an' air pump equipped at the lower end of its cylinder l. with a tapered rubber' cup 2, similar in construction to that usually employed on an ordinary sewer plunger, and having an upwardly tapered tubular neck il, fitted on the lower end ot the pump cylinder and held between an adjustable exterior clai'nping collar 4 and an intube The interior ot the (i ot' the neck of the cup is ot than the 'intormediateI portionI 7 to form a shoulder 8,
upper portion ranged on of the cup is applied tothe lower end of the-- latter, after Whi 'h which fits against the lo'wer end of the pump cylinder, and the tube 5, which has an exteroi-ly threaded upper end 9 to engage interior screw threads the pump cylinder, is tapered upwardly and it presents a smooth curved outer 'face to the curved inner face of the intermediate p0rtion 7 of th'e cup, and it ts snugly against and conforms to the configuration of the same, so as to support the neck portion of the cup and provide an air tight connection between the saine and the cylinder.
Thev clamping collar Ll has o-utturned terminais 11', perforated for the reception of a bolt 1Q, which adjustably clamps the collar on the pump cylinder. The collar forms a stop for the neck of the cup and prevents the latter from moving upwardly or inwardly on the pump cylinder. ln assembling the parts, the clamping collar is ar -the pumpl cylinder, and the neck the collar is firmly clamped on the pump cylinder 'contiguous to the neck in proper position to form a stop for the same. The tapered tube is then screwed into the lower threaded end ot' the pump cylinder and the rubber cup is firmly held in position on the cylinder and the tapered tube, of'the latter prevents any downward or outward movement of the cup while the clamping collar holds the cup against upward or inward movement.

'lhc iuppcr end of the pump cylinder is equipped with a removable cap 13, through which passes a piston rod 14, carrying a piston 15 end and provided at its iipper end with a handle 16. The piston l5, which is of the ordinary construction, is limited in its downward or inward movement by the upper end of the tapered tube 5, valve scat. To operate the device the cup is placed over the pipe in which there is a stoppage, and s'iilicient water is supplied to enable the rubber cup to make an air tight tit, if there be not suilicient Water inl or around the pipe.
