To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN A. HARRISS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved I Knife, of which the following is a full, clear,-

and exact description.

My .invention relates to knives and 1t has for its object to provide one having a detachable blade, which is held against the handle I by a hook rod, the hook on the rod engaging the blade around an orifice, and the rod being secured in a channel in the handle. The blade is reinforced by a brace bar, the butt end of which is disposed in a socket in the handle.

By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the handle 5 has a longitudinal channel 6, extending therethrough, .and spaced from the. said longitudinal channel there is a socket 7 in one end of the handle 5. A ferrule 8 is disposed arou nd the said end of the handle 5, forming one edge of the socket 7, the opposite edge 9 of the said socket bein formed by a metal member which is disposed in the handle 5. The

blade lOhas a recess 11', on its back edge12, and near its point 13, to receive a transverse pin 14 secured to the sides of the U-shaped brace bar 15. This brace bar 15 is disposed over the back edge of the blade '10, with its pin-14 disposed in-the recess 11. The butt end 16 of the U-shaped brace bar isdisposed in the socket 7 so that when the butt end 17 of the blade 10 is disposed against the end of the handle 5, with the U-shaped brace bar 15 in position, the butt end 16 of the brace bar will be disposed against the inner end of the socket -7, with the pin 14; on the brace bar disposed firmly against the forward wall of the recess 11. In this way the brace bar will be held firmly in position rela= tively to the blade 10 and to the handle 5.

being disposed in the channel 6, so that the nut 21 may engage the threaded terminal'2 2 of the rod 20 to draw the rod 20 back and With it the blade 10, until the blade 10 is held firmly against the end of the handle 5, with the brace bar 15 held firmly between the inner end of the socket 7 and'the recess 11. When the nut 21 is turned home it will be found that the blade is held firmly in posltion against the handle, and that the brace bar 15 is secured in position by the said operation.

It will be noticed that the brace 15 embraces the back of the blade 10 through out the major portion of its length, interlocks with such bladenear its forward end and projects at its rear end beyond the blade to enter the recess in'the end. of the handle. This rear extension of the brace coiiperates with the rod 20 in securing the blade firmly to and bracing it in connection with the handle. In operation, by loosening the nut 21, the handle, blade, rod 20 and brace 15 can be quickly detached from each other, leaving the parts in convenient position for sterilization or other cleansing or for the substitution of a new blade 10, as may be desired.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A knife comprising a handle having a ferrule around one end, there being a socket in the said end and a channel in the handle extending through the said end, a blade having a recess remote from its butt end, and a brace bardetachably engaging the blade with its butt end disposed in the socket, and having a-member normally disposed in the recess, and arod having a hook detachably engaging the blade and secured in the channe 2. brace bar engaging the blade and having a member disposed in the recess, and a butt end disposed in the socket, the distance between the member on the brace bar and the butt end of the brace bar being greater than the distance between the outer portion of the forward wall of the recess and the inner end of the socket, when the blade is in position in the handle, and means for holding the blade in the direction of the handle for securing the blade in place, and the brace bar in position relatively to the blade and the handle. I

3. A knife comprising a handle having a socket in one end and a channel extending throughthe said end, a blade having a recess remote from its butt end, a brace bar engaging the blade and having a member disposed in the said recess, and a butt end disposed in the socket, the distance between the member on the brace bar and the buttend of the brace bar being greater than the distance between the outer portion of the forward wall of the recess and the inner end of the socket when the blade is in position in the direction of the handle and the brace bar in position relatively to the blade and the handle.

4. A knife comprising a handle having a channel formed vlongitudinally through it for the passage of a blade fastening bolt, the handle being also provided inthe blade end 'with a socket, a blade, a brace bar fitted longitudinally to the back edge of the blade and engaged at its outer end, with the blade and projecting at its butt end beyond the blade to enter the socket in the handle, the butt end of the blade bearing against the end of the handle, and a securing rod hooked at one end in connection with the blade, and passing through the longitudinal channel in the handle and secured substantially as set forth.

5. A knife comprising a handle having a socket in one end and a channel extending through the said end, a blade having a butt end disposed against the said end of the handle, 'a recess spaced from the said buttend, and an orifice, a brace bar detachably engaging the blade with its butt end dis posed in the socket and having a member normally disposed in a recess in the blade, and a rod having a hook detachably engaging the orifice in the blade and secured in the channel.

6. A knife comprising a handle having a socket at one end, and a channel extending through the said end, a blade having a butt end disposed against the said end of the handle, a recess spaced from the said butt end, and an orifice, a brace bar fitted longitudinally to the back edge of the blade, and detachably engaging the blade, the butt end of the brace bar being disposed in the socket, and a rod having a hook detachably engaging the orifice in the blade and secured in the channel.

7. A knife, substantially as herein described, comprising a handle having in its blade end a longitudinal socket and also having a longitudinal opening for a securing rod, a blade abutting at its rear edge against the socketed end of the handle, a brace bar fitted to the back edge of the blade and engaged therewith and projecting beyond the butt end of the blade and entering the socket in the handle and a securing rod connected with the blade and extending thence into the longitudinal opening of the handle and secured, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

8. A knife, substantially as described, comprising a blade, a brace bar fitted to the back edge of the blade and projecting beyond the buttend of the blade forming a rearward extension of the brace bar, a han-
