which the following is a specification.
7 This invention relates to log turners and especially to steam operated log turners for use in saw mills whereby a log of any size lying on the saw carriage maybe turned so as to present a differentface to the saw, and
has for its objects to provide a device which 1 will accomplish this aim with great speed andease. n I
Further objects of my invention are to make a device which can be mounted onthe steam niggers at present in use and which will greatly improve their action as willap pear in the further description of the machine. I I attain these and other ob ects by the devices, mechanisms and arrangements illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an elevation showing my invention withdrawn below the mill platform and ready to be operated; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it engaging-the log and ready to turn it outward on the carriage; Fig. 3 is an'enlarged view of a portion thereof with the log hook withdrawn from operative position; and Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the log hook in operative position.

The vertical steam cylinder 1 is mounted below the floor of the mill substantially in the saw line thereof and is provided with a suitable piston acting therein in the usual manner, said piston having a piston rod 3 passing through the upper head of the cylinder 1. A cross head 4 is secured to the end of the piston rod 3 and slides vertically in the guides 5 secured to the frame work of the mill. The main bar 6 of this device is pivotally secured at its lower end to' the cross head 4: and extends upward therefrom, but has a controlled movement on the said pivotal connection so that it can travel either directly upward or'radially about said pivot. The said bar 6 has an enlargement 7 at its upper end and a spur tooth 8 is secured near the upper end thereof in the usual manner. This improved log turning bar operates in the following manner :'VVhensteam is admitted to the under side of the cylinder 1 the piston thereof is forced upward and carries the bar, 6 upward with it. Simultaneously steam may be admitted to the front end of the cylinder 9 drawing the piston backward, said piston drawing the said bar 6 backward by means of the piston rod 11. The bar 6 now occupies the raised and inclined position with the hook 16 lying beside the said to the top end of the cylinder 13 the piston 14: thereof is forced, downward and the rod 15 turnsthe hook 16 on its pivot, raising its the bar 6. Steam is now admitted to the rear end of the cylinder19 forcing the piston thereof forward and with it the upper end of the bar 6 until said bar occupies the vertical position. Steam is now admitted to the lower end of the cylinder 13 thus forcing 16 downward bringing it into the log. The operator now'reverses the movement of the piston rod 11 of the cylinder 9, causing the bar 6 to move backwardthus rolling the log on said log only during its upwardmotion.

Having described my invention What I claim is In a log turner, the combination with a fixed vertical guide track; of a cross-head engaging said guide track and free to move vertically thereon; a fixed vertical steam cylinder; a piston rod, with piston in'said cylinder, operated by the steam therein and engaging said cross-head to move it vertically on said guide track; a bar, pivoted at its foot to said cross-head; a pivoted cylinder acting at an angle to said first cylinder; a piston rod, with piston in said cylinder, operated by the steam therein and engaging the head of said bar whereby the distance of said bar head from the pivot center of said second cylinder is controlled; a hook pivoted to said bar head and adapted to lie to the rear of the face thereof when in inoperative position but to extend over the log when in operative position; a bracket extending out from the foot of said bar; a third steam cylinder mounted on said bracket; and a piston rod, With piston in said third steam cylinder operated by the steam therein and engaging the end of said hook, whereby said hook is swung on its pivot out from said bar to engage the log.
