Be it known that I, JOSEF SPIELMANN, a subject 01 the King of Hungary, residing at- Ve1sailles, in the co-unty of Allegheny and -State of Pennsylvania, have invented aer- '1his invention relates to a metallietie and ra.il fastener, and the primary objzct 0f my invention is to furnish a tie of the channel-l5ar co-nstruction With novel fasten ers that can be easily and quickly placed in position for retaining a Tail upon a. tie in a manner thatprevents vertical arid lateral displacement of the rail.
Another object 0f this invention is to provide rail fasteners that can be installed by unskilled labor, the fasteners being simple in construction durable andhighly efficient. for the purposes forwhich they are intended.
A further object of' this invention is to provide 'a metallic t ie -that can be easily tamped in a roadbed t0 provide a firm foundation for the rails 0f a track.
With the above and other o-bjects in view the invention fes'ides in the novel construction, combinatibn and arrangement of arts to be hereinafter specifically described ancl then claimerl, and reference will now be lind to fhe drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion 0f a t-ie in acco rdance wifih this invention, Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the same, taken on the line IIII of Fig. l, Fig. 3 is a perspective view 0f a detached fastener plate, und Fig. 4 is a penspective view of a detached fasteller.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a tie'of the channel-bmconstruction, the bar being inverted und supporting the base flanges 2 0f a rail 3. The top of the tieis provided With oppositely disposed rectangular openings 4 at the longitudinal edges of the base flanges 2 of the rail 3, und arranged in these openings are fasteners 5. The lower ends of the fasteners 5 have lips 0 engaging the nnder sicleiof the top of thetie, und the upp er encls of snid fasteners are provided w itli longitudinal heads.7, seid heads extending 011 t0 the base flanges 2 0f the mil 3. T he fasteners 5 in cross section nre of a less area tha'n the openings 4, thereby providing suflicient room in the openings 4 for the depend1ng portions 8 of fastener plates 9. The fastener lutes 9 are rectangular in plan and the inner end of each plate is cut und sheared, as at 10 am]. a ortion -0f the cut zind sheared material bent pwardly t0 provide a support 11 for the outer end 12 of the heads 7. In shearing and cutting the plates 9, as at 10, saicl plate is provided with parallel arms 13 anal the inner ends of these arms are bent upwardly to provide flanges 14 that engage the longitudinal edge of the base: flange 2 of the rail 3. The depending ortion of the plate 9 is removed from the outer edge of said platte und said depending 'por tion 8 presents a vertical shoulder 15 for engaging the unter Wall of the op ening 1 with the outer edge of the plate 9 project1ng 0n t0 the top of the.tie as besl; shown in Fig. l.
T0 assemble the fasteners in the tie 1 for holding the base flanges2 of the 1'ail 3, a '3astener can be placed in the cut awayport-ion 10 of the faste ner plate 9nnd with this plate made of a resilient material, the plate can be placed upon the tie 1 with the flanged ends of the arms 13 resting upon the tie and with the pla te at an inclination to the tie. VVith the lower end of the faslener 5 extending into the opening 4, the fastener 5 can be gradually shifted into engagement with the tie 1 and the b-ase fiange 2 of the rail 3. The depending portion 8 of the fastener plate ca1i be quickly sprung into the opening 1 und. the support 11 engaging under the enl 12 0f the head 7, will firmly hold the faten61 und pievent accidental displacerneht.
