AUGUSTO CAPRA AND LOIDOVICO CONTRI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y1.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent. Applioatlonfiled May as, 1911. Serial No. eaasoa To all whom it may concern.
I Be it known that we, AUeUs'ro OAPRA and Lonovico CoN'rm, citizens of the Italia'n Monarchy, and residents of the city, county, and State of New York, have-invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following 1s a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in toys and more particularl to an improved device for the spinning 0 tops.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved toy for spinning a top having a neat appearance and one which can be produced at low cost.
In the drawing illustrating the invention and accompanying this specification Figure 1 is a perspective view of thetoy and Fig. 2 is a side view illustrating themode of operation. 1
The toy comprises three general parts, a holder 3, a top 4 and a string 5. The holder has a handle 6 and a ring 7 forming an aperture 8 and the ring is provided with holes 9 and 10 oppositely disposed. The top comprises a head 12 and a shank 13 provided with rooves 14. The head carries a pin 15. e one end of the string 5 is formed into a loop 16 and the other end carries a button 17.
In operation the'loop 16 of the string is passed through the hole 9 from the outside of the ring 7 and is then drawn up through the aperture 8. The loop is then hooked over the in 15 and the string wound around the shan 13 of the top in the grooves 14. Fig. 1 illustrates the beginning of the operation showing the loop 16 hooked over the pin 15. When nearly all of the string has een wound ti ht-ly around the top, the latter is inserte in the aperture 8 as shown in Fig. 2. It will be noted that theaperture 8 is of larger diameter than the shank of the top. The toy is now ready for the spinning of the top. The holder 1s held" in the left hand and with the right hand.the operator takes hold of the button 17 and by. a quick pull in direction of the arrow 18 unwinds the stri'n from the top and lifts the, top from the older and simultaneously therewith unwinds the string and the top is given its rotary or spinnln movement.
By reason of the fact that t e string-is Patented nee. is, rare.
wound from the top of the shank and to the so to speak, and disenga ed from the pin 15, as is clearly understoo from the position of the partsin Fig. 2 where the dotted lines indicate the position of the top the moment the latter leaves the holder.
The operation is greatly facilitated because the aperture 8 permits free movement of the top as the latter leaves the holder and also permits the top to be drawn sharply to one side giving a quicker initial movement.
The grooves 14 enable the string to be wound orderly and tightly around the shank I i 13 so as to set the top spinning quickly.
In case the operator is left handed the operation- -is begun by passing the loop 16 through the hole 10 and then vup through the aperture 8.
We claim:
The combination of a holder having a ring provided with oppositely disposed holes in the wall thereof, a top having a head adapted to rest on said ring and rovidetf with a grooved shank adapted to t freely within the same, adownwardly projecting pin in the said head of the top and a string for spinning said top and for lifting the same out of the ring, the said stringybeing passed through one of the said holes in the ring and wound in the rooves on the said shank, the one end of t e string having a loop adapted to engage the said pin, whereby the said string is wound on the shank from the head of the to and downward to cause a positive upwar movement of the top when the string is pulled to free the top from the holder and to rotate said top.
