LADDER ATTACHMENT.
Toy all 'whom t may concern Be it known' that I, BENT G. Lansox, a citizen of thel United States, residing at Jamestown, vin the county of Stutsman and State of North Dakota, haveinvented a new and useful Ladder Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ladder attachments, for supporting paint pails and paint brushes for painters use; and the object is to provide an eliicient device which may be readily adjusted at any desired height on a ladder and adapted to hold one or more paint pails and one or more paint brushes above the paint pails, so that any paint dripping from the brush will drip into the pail; and as the device supports several pails and brushes, the operator may have the wall paint for a house in one pail and the triinining paint in the other pail and apply both colors at a single placing ofl the ladder and a single L'ip up and down the same. Much time is thereby saved, and further time is saved by finding the brush always ready for use and not submerged in the paint in the paint paileach time it has been idle while the other brush was in use. Time is also saved by being able to support the brushes without rubbing the paint out of them, as the paint will drip from them into the pails.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front or outer side elevation of a portion of a ladder with my attachment adjusted on it and a paint pail and paint brush supported at one end thereof. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the ladder shown in Fig. 1 and the attachment on same. Fig. 3 is a top view of what is shown in Fig. 1.
Referring .to the drawing by reference numerals, 1 designates the side bars and 2 the rungs of any form of ladder. Ada ted to hang by hooks 3 upon either one o thev rungs are two hangers 4, which extend downward about half way to the next rung below it, so as not to interfere with the regular use of the steps or rungs. Said hangersI are slidable on a horizontal bar 5, which bar rests against the outer inclined side of the ladder when the latter leans against the building to -be painted. The ends of the bar 5 extend beyond the edges of the ladder and are each provided with a hook 6 for the support of the bail 7 of a paint pail supported as the pail 8; and adjacent said hook is a V-shaped gap or grip 9, in which Specication of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 20, 1912. Serial No. 698,668.
only one pail is in use suspended at one end of the device, I secure the bar 5 to the ladder by additional means, which in the present embodiment of the invention consists of a standing bolt 11 xed in each of the slidable arms 4; and upon each standing bolt a clamping arm 13 having a short sleeve 12 to guide it on the bolt; and rearward of each clamping arm the boltis provided with a partly compressed coil spring 14 with a washer 15 and a thumb-nut 16, by which latter two elements the tension of the spring is regulated.
I n the operation or use of the device, the painter may suspend one or more paint pails and brushes on the device either before or after mounting the device on the ladder, in either case he walks up the ladder to the desired height, places the hooks 3 upon one of the rungs, near the uprights ofthe ladder whether the ladder 'is wide or narrow; he then adjusts the clamps 13v and nuts 16 so as to' hold the device with the necessary firmness to the ladder. After the tension of the springs 14 isregulated for a certain ladder according to the thickness of its side bars, the nuts 16 remain unchanged and the springs are simply compressed by the clamping arms in swinging the latter into and out ladder.
2. A ladder attachment comprising a bar adapted to. extend across aladder and beyond the edges thereof, each end of the bar having a hook adapted to receive the bail of a paint pail, and adjacent such hook a V-shaped notch adapted to hold a paint brush above the pail suspendedfrom the hook, and means for holding the bar to the ladder; said means comprising hooks adapted to take over the upper side of a rung of the ladder. y
3. A ladder attachment comprisin a bar adapted to be secured across a lad er and extend beyond the same, each end of the bar having a hook adapted to receive the bail of a-paint pot, and a V-shaped gap adjacent thereto for holding a paint brush, and means for holding the bar to the ladder, said holding means comprising spring-closed clamps ada ted to take over the side bars of the lad er, and means for regulating the tension of the springs of said clamps.
4. A ladder attachment comprising a bar adapted tol be secured across a'ladder and extend beyond the same, each end of the bar having means for supporting a paintl pail and a paint brush above the pail, and means for holding said bar to the ladder; said means conslsting of two hangers slidable on the bar and provided with hooks adapted to take over the to of one of the rungs of the ladder, and c amps carried by the hangers for engaging the side bars of the ladder and pinch it against the crossing bar', whereby said bar forms one j aW of each clamp.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
