Be it known that we, Gnonen .V. DUNGAN i' and CHARLES E, Hoevencitizens ot the United States, residing at Mount Joy and Strasburg, respectively, in the county et Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usetul impro-vefollowing is a specification.

Our invention relates to washing macl'nnes of that type illustrated in Patent No.

The primary object ot our invention is to improve the details ot construction ot this type of machine so as to provide a device in which the various parts are readily detachable from each other to permit the device to be packed into small compass and so econoniize in the shipping or the. transportation ot the sa-mc, and also so as to permitthe'device to be readily taken apart tor cleaning or packing and readily applied to any tub within which the machine. is to be mounted.

A further object is to provide a washing machine in which the parts may be clamped upon any ordinary tub, the parts being adjustable so as to adapt thesanie machine to be used .with tubs ot various sizes.

'IA further object is to provide means whereby the plunger carrying one ot the scrubbing boards or presser boards may be either reciprocated or rotated without reiroving the various parts from the tub.

Our invention is illustrated in the aecon.-

le'terring to the drawings, L) designates a tub ot any ordinary or usual character, it being one ott the points ot our invention that it may be used on any tub and is adjustable to tubs of various sizes. 'l`hc`ivashing machine is supported upon-the tub by means et a transverse bar 3. This bar has a length rather greater than the diameter of any ordinary tub, and at one end is provided wit'h .an opening l for engagement with the pivot pin of a clamp. This clamp, illustrated in detail in Fig. 5, comprises a U-shaped clip extending over the yedge of the tub .and having downwardly extending biturcated legs G on one side and a downwardly extending leg 7 on the other side, these legs or prongs embracing the tub.

.The leg 7 is outwardly bent at its end and i'novided with a. headed stud 8 for engagelnen t with a cam lever t), illustrated in Fig. This cani lever t) is formed at one end with a. rounded head 10, the inner face oi this head being jt'orined with notches ll and 12. either ot which may be engaged with the stud 8. It will be seen that the notches li and l2 are eccentric to the rounded face ot the head 1() so that when the clamp is turned into a position where the handle thereof is parallel to the wall of the tub, the Cain shaped head willsengage against the side ot the tub and lock the clip 5 in tight engagement with the tub.

The clip 5 is formed with an upwardly projecting lug 13, troni which projects a pivot stud lll with which the openingl 4 in the bar 3 engages. Pivoted to the car or lug 'I3 hy means oi.: the pivot'. l?)a is the guard 15 which is U-shaped in cross section. lVhen turned down in the position shown in Fig. 3, one end l5 of this guard engages over the end of the pivot. bolt lt and holds the bar 3 in engagement with the pivot bolt or'pin. When this `guard is turned-upward 0r at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 5, the end 15 willbe shifted out 0f 'engagenient with the end of :the stud 14 which forms the pivot bolt or pin and thus permit the bar 3 to be Withdrawnlaterally from its Leimen.

The board is preferably supported in its position at the bottom of the tub by a plurality of spring arms 54' which are formed integral with feet 55 attachedto the under side of the presser board 52. rllhe upwardly extending arms 54: being resilient act to hold the presser board in position at the bottom of the tub, while permitting its ready detachment when desired. It will be seen that these spring arms also' act to cent-er the scrubbingboard in the tub, and that the feet. termed integral with the arms raise the bottom et the scrubbing board above the bottom of the tub so that the water may freely circulate.

The operation of our invention will be obvious from what has gone before. tter the parts have been attached to the tub, the presser board 30 is lifted out ot' the tub as shown in dotted lines in 3 and clothes are placed in the tub. The presser board is then turned downwart and the bar 3 is clamped in placeu'pon the clips 16 by means of the pivoted finger 21. The handle 43 is then reeiprocated either. manually or by machinery, and the reciprocations ot the presser board act to suck and torce the water through ythe clothes. thus very rapidly and effectively cleansing the clothes. Either before or after this operation the clothes may be rubbed by rotating the presser board. rfhis` is secured by detaching the link 50 from its engagement with the end ol the handle 43, whereupon the handle may be used as a lever to rotate the plunger rod Q9. The lever -l3 affords means whereby considerable power may be applied to the plunger7 thus giving a thorough rubbil'ig action to the clothes, the clothes being rubbed between the upper presser board and the lower scrubbing board and the ribs 32 and 5l acting to thoroughly scrub the clothes and also squeezing them so that the water will be torce/d therethrough. By providing t`or both a reciprocating movement ot the plunger and a. rotatery movement, l secure a very thorough cleansing action. It it is desired in placing the clothes in place in the tub or removing them therefrom, the plunger, the actiilating` lever and the presser board 30 may be entirely disconnected from the tub by simply lifting the guard 15 and the linger 2l, thereby permitting the supporting bar 3 to be disengaged trom the cli ps 5 and lo. lf the device is to be applie'd Ato ar tub ot different size, the plunger may be readily centered` by sliding. the yoke along the bar 3 until the center of ythe tub is reached and then again elan'iping the yoke' to the bar 8. lt will be obvious, ot' cours@y that the link 50 Will shift in one direction or the other so as to permit the stud si on the plunger to enter the central perit'oration on the loyer Lt3. It will be seen that these various tuips and clamps permit the device to be very cheaply made, permit it to be readily packed in small compass and permit it to be readily set up or taken down` and that by providing adjustable clips or tub clamps upon the rod 3, the supporting rod maybe used ter tubs of varirnsl sizes, and tl at by providing the yoke 22 the plunger rod may bc properly centered with relation-to any particular sized tub. ln order to secure a greater suction when the plunger is drawn up so as to draw the water with more :torce through the clothes, I may provide the valve plate 55 as illustrated in Figs. l and 3, this rvalve plate being circular and having approximately the size ot the scrubbing board 30.' When, however7 the plunger is raised, the weight of the water will close the 'valve plate and as a consequence the board 30 will exert a sucking act-ion and draw the water very powerfully through the clothes being washed.

l-laving thus described our invention, what we claim as new is:-

l. A washing machine attachmentincluding a supporting bar adapted to extend across a tub7 and provided with adjustable means tor engaging the sid'es ot a tub, a plunger, a yoke embracing the plunger and permitting the plunger to have vertical slidable movement. said yoke being slidably mounted on the supporting bar. and n'ieans `for dctaehably engaging the yoke with the supporting bar in adjusted position.

2. A washing machine attarlnnent including a supporting bar adapted to extend across a tub, and provided 'with adjustable tub clamping n'uans, a plunger, a yoke coinprising a curved body portion embracing the plunger and permitting the plunger to have vertical slidingmovement, said body portion having end flanges, oppositcly disposed ears on one end flange slidingly engaging the bar, an ear formed on the other tlange and bent overto embrace the supporting bar, and a` cani pin extending through the last mentioned rar and flange and engaging against the edge ot the supporting bar.
