preferably as near the cutting edge as possible, as indicated. in Fig. 3, and the unloading line J' is attached to the rear of the dipper by any suitable means, and preferably as near the lower'edge of the dipper as is 65 practicable.
In operation, the shovel is brought to the position'indicated by full lines in Fig. 1, the bosses -F beingjat the upper ends of the slots G and the cutting edge ofthe shovel is l :inclined forwardly and downwardly toward theA bottom of the excavation. -The cutting edge-of'the'shovel with respect to the arms -C and C, the position of the bosses F in the slots G, and the position ofthe dipper on 757` the pivot E, remain relatively the same until after the dipper. passes'the vertical dotted lines shown in Fig. 1, or a linepdrawn through the center of the pivot H. The combination, with a boom, of arms arranged in pairs and pivoted thereon,'sai"d arms being secured together to form a rigid frame, adipper having its'rear portion pivotally connected to one pair of arms, the other pair Vof varms having curved slots in the lower ends thereof, bosses mounted -on the forward portion of said. dipper and adapted to slide in said slots, and loading and unloadin lines attached to said dipper.
