Be it known that I, RUssELL WILES, acitizen of the United States, residing at Chicago,
in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Excavating.

Each of the ropes, (1, is provided with a button, 0, between the eye through which it asses and the sheave over which it runs, sai button being in such position on the ro e that when it is in contact with the eye t 1e shovel will be in substan tially a horizontal position.
In the operation of my improved scoop the scoop is drawn forward through the material to be operated upon by means of the haulingrope, and during this portion of the operation the buttons will be drawn a ainst the eyes so thatthe propelling force wil be exerted upon the shovel by thebuttons, and the shovel will be held in a substantially horizontal position by means of the ropes which. connect the buttons with the .eye, (H, on the shovel. After the shovel has been filled it is raised by means of the supporting bail and moved to the positioawhere it is desired to dump it, the hauling-rope being maintained -taut to hold the shovel horizontal. When it is desired'to dump the shovel the tension of swings down, the buttons simultaneously moving up towardthe sheaves and the ropes sliding through the eyes.
It will be observed that this construction is exceedingly simple and accomplishes its purposewithout certain of the complexities of other forms. of scoops now in use. It, will also be observed that the eyes, (0 are curved, as shown in the'drawings, so as to conform to the course of the ropes and are flared outwill be presented to the ropes whereby undue and unnecessary friction will be exerted thereon.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of this construction, without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not intend, therefore, to limit myself to the specific form herein shown and described.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a shovel having a cutting edge at its forward end and a supporting bail pivoted to the shovel behind the center of gravity thereof, of a hauling-rope and stationary device on the front of the shovel through which said rope passes, said rope having a connection with the supporting bail and an engagement device on the rope adapted to cooperate with the portion to limit the relative movement of the rope therethrough.
2. The combination with a shovel having a cutting edge at its front end and a supporting bail pivoted thereto behind the center of gravity thereof, of eyes secured to the shovel, ropes passing through said eyes and having connection with the hauling-bail, and projections on the ropes adapted to engage the eyes.
3.
