` Letters Patent No. 104,712, dated .Tune 28, 1,870.
` IMPROVEMENT IN KNOB-LATCHES.
` The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Beit known that I, JonnDAvIs, of Terre Haut-e, in the county of Terre Haute, and State'of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and Ido hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact* description thereof', reference being hadto .the accompanying drawings and tothe letters of reference "marked thereon which .form apart l of this specification.`
The nature of my invention-consists in the construction and arrangement `of a door-lock, where b oth the latch and boltlareoperated by the saine spindle,` as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which i my invention appertainsito `make and use the same, I
will now proceed to describelits constrution and oper-V ation, referring to the annexed drawings, infwhich" l Figure 1 is atransvers'c, vertical sectionof with my lockattached; I` y a door,
Figure 2 is an inside v`view, of. the-lock;
' y Figurel is a transverse vertical section ofthe door-frame, showing the manner of' securing -the bolt `Figure Liris an inside view of a lock and `bolt alone,
" showing its application to left-hand doors u Figure 5 is a side view ofthe door-spindle; and
Figuren isa detached view'of the tumblers of the lock.,
A represents the lock-box, in which is placed'the latch B,`,pressedY outwardijby means' of two spiral springs, d a, surroundingttwo rods, b l, attached to `the latch within the born i i Above the latch B, in the lock-box A', is placed a bolt,L C, `,which is pressed inward by meansrof two spi` ral springs,`c c, surroundiug'two rods, zl d, attached to "thebolt It is, of course, understood that the latch B, as well asthe bolt O, withftheirrods, move in suitable guides l formed inthe inside of thelockbox.`
V,'lheylatch and bolt are' operated by means of two f cam-shaped tumbler-5,1) D',the one, D, catching on i a projection on the inner'end ofthe latch, to draw l thexsame inward, and 3 thefother tumbler, D, pressing on ,the inner end *of lthe bolt, to Vforce it outrounded by a` spiral spring, g, ywhich forces the bolt In the upper edge of the bolt `Gis ahole, for the reception .ofsaid bolt j', and `from this` holeto thev i outerfedge of the bol-t C" is a` curved groove, as
shown in dot-tedlines in g.\2,"so that, when the bolt C is forced outward in thejdoor-frame, the.1 bolt f 'will be movedupward :by this 'curved or inclined groove, and, as soon as the bolt f reaches the hole in-'the bolt C, the spring g forces` it`1 into said hole, holding or "lockingit From theupper end of the bplt f a cord, h, leads to the inside of the door-frame, or to anyother dei To all whomt't may concern; l
`sired place in the house, and, by pulling` on said cord, the bolt j' is raised up out of the bolt G, and the springs e eat once throw the bolt back again.
The door-spindle Gris 'square at both ends'bnt `round in` the center, and provided'with two springs, m m, at its inner end, to which springs are Vattached pieces n a, the inner vends of which correspond with the formation of the inner knob H, and the outer ends provided with cat-chest' t', as shown in tig. 1.
`The knob H is slotted, for the insertion of the 'spindle G, with its spring pieces n n, and onvthe in- Vside of the. door is a rose, I, into which the end of the knob is inserted, and the inner edge of said rose iits in notches on the pieces n il, so as to hold it-in place.
The spindlevpasses through bo'th tumblers D and D', and i's so arranged that the round portion `will be within the tumbler D', while the square portion is within the tumbler D.
On the outside end of the spindle G is placed another knob, J, which is, by screw-threads or other snit-` able means, held to the rose K, on. the outside of the` door preventing it from comingr out, but allow- Ving the spindle to -be withdrawn from it from the inside. y
' The loc-k, heilig in this position, it will be seen that,
-by turning the 4knob only, the tumbler D is operated, v which actuates the latch.
Tolock the door, press on the spring pieces n n, and withdraw the knob H, with the spindle, until the catchesi 4i catch inthe rose I,when `the roundI pol'-, `tion of thespindlewill hewithin 'the tumbler D,
and-fth'e-tumbler D' have theouter square portion throughit,`so that, byturning Athe knob again, the bolt C will be forced into the doorframe, and be locked by the bolt j, when the knob and spindle are pressed inward backv again to' theirformer position.
` To unlock, it will then only be necessary to pull on the cord h, as above set forth;
' Vlhe locality of this cord or wire should be a secret .to the inmates of the house.
The boltC may be placed below the latch B, as
l well asV above, and the lock be used on both right and'Y left-hand doors.
Having thus fully describedmy invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure'by Let# ters Patent, isi 1. The spring pieces n n, provided with catches i t',
. and attached to 'the spindle G, substantially forv the purposes herein set fort-h.
' 2. The combination of the spindle G, tumblers D D', latch B, bolt C, and bolt f, all constructed and arranged as' described, to operate substantiallyin the manner andlfor the purposes herein set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoingv'asmy. own, I affix my `signature in presence of two-witnesses.
