FAN.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, PETER M. FRANZEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Iniprovements in Fans, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to fans and the main object of the invention is to provide a fan of simple, cheap and improved construction.

Another object is to provide improved means for fastening the fan body and handle together in such manner as to leave no disfiguring connections exposed on the front surface of the fan body.

Other objects and advantages will appear in the course of this specification andwith all of said objects and advantages in view, this invention consists in the several novel features of construction, arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter fully set forth and particularly defined in the claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the drawings furnished herewith, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fan embodying one form of the present invention, Fig. 2 is a rear view of the fan, showing the handle in unfolded condition prior to its removal from the fan body, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the handle alone, Fig. 4 is a detail, horizontal section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is a detail, horizontal section taken on the line 55 Fig 2 and Fig. 6 is a detail, horizontal section taken on the line 66 of Fig. 1.

Referring to said drawings 10, represents the fan body usually made of cardboard, and 11, its handle. The face of both sides of said fan body may be used for advertising purposes or they may be suitably ornamented, the principal ad or ornamentation being placed upon the front face 10 whereas the minor ones may be placed upon the opposite face 10*. The fan body is formed on its rear face with a longitudinally extending pocket 12, adapted for the reception of one member of the handle and said pocket may be formed by pasting or otherwise securing a separate piece 18, to the main piece 14, of the body 10, the paste being omitted at the point where it is desired to form the pocket. tio-ns 15, and if desired the edges of said perforations may be reinforced by eyelets 16, to prevent danger of tearing of said edges.

The handle 11, comprises two bars 16, 17, (preferably wooden sticks) hinged together at one end by means of a hinge 18, prefer ably comprising a piece of flexible material pasted or otherwise secured to the bars 16, 17. One of said bars 16, is formed with a number of alined perforations 19, adapted to register with the perforations 15, in the back wall of the pocket 12, and the other bar 17 is provided with a number of lugs or but-- tons 20, that extend through the perfora tio-ns 15, and seat in the perforations 19, whenever the fan body 10, and the handle 11, are secured together. The bars 16, 17, are formed near their free end with one or more offset or shouldered portions 21, 22, arranged to engage with each other to pre vent longitudinal slipping of one member upon the other, and one of said bars is provided on one face with a longitudinally ex tending rib 23, adapted to seat in a longitudinally extending groove 24, formed in the adjacent face of the other bar. The hinge line of the two members of the handle is located at the top edge of the body and the other ends of the handle extend beyond the body, where they are preferably rounded off to provide a smooth grip; if desired a ferrule or sleeve 25, may be slipped over the ends of the grip port-ion to fasten the parts together.

In fastening the handle upon the body, the bar 16, is slipped into the pocket 12, from the top, and adjusted therein to bring the perforations 19, into register with the perforations 15. The other bar 17, is then swung over on its hinge 18, bringing its side (the one containing the lugs 20) against the back piece 1 1*, of the pocket, and then pressing the lugs 20, through the perforations 15, and into the perforations 19, of the bar 16; the grip portion of the handle, together with the shouldered parts thereupon, engage each other and the rib 23, seats in the groove 24:. This arrangement in itself makes a fairly secure connection for the two members of the handle, but if desired the ferrule or sleeve 25, may he slipped over the ends of the grip portion to prevent any danger of separation of the two members of the handle.

It is to be observed that the body and handle may be rigidly secured together without the use of staples, nails or other like fastening means such as are ordinarily employed in fastening the body of a fan to its handle, consequently the entire front surface of the fan body may be used for one large pictorial representation or advertisement whose beauty is not marred by any unsightly fastening means. Any number of interchangeable fan bodies may be used with one handle provided they have the same arrangement of perforations, so that one fan body may be removed from the handle and replaced by another one bearing a different set of advertisements or pictorial representations. The ferrule or sleeve may hear an ad if it is so desired. The invention is particularly useful as an advertising medium because of the possibility of frequent changeability of the advertising matter.

I realize that various alterations and modifications of this device are possible without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not. therefore desire to limit myself to the exact form of construc tion shown and described.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. As a new article of manufacture, a fan comprising a fan body having a longi- 'tudinally extending pocket formed therein,

a two-piece handle, the two pieces of which are hinged together at one end and one of said pieces seated in the pocket in said leaf, one of said handle pieces and one wall'of the pocket being formed with registering perforations and the other member of the handle being provided with lugs registering with and seating in said perforations in the wall of said pocket and in the other handle member, and thereby connecting together said body and handle.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a fan comprising a fan body formed with a longitudinally extending pocket having a series of alined perforations in one of its walls, a handle comprising two members hingedly connected together atone end and formed with interlocking portions at their free ends, one of said members being arranged to be removably seated in said pocket and having perforations registering with those of the wall of the pocket, the other member being formed with lugs registering with and seating in said perforations in said wall and in the other handle member, and thereby connecting together said body and handle.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a fan comprising a fan body having one flat decorated surface and formed upon its other side with a. longitudinally extending pocket having a series of alined perforations in its back wall, and a handle comprising two members hingedly connected together at one end and formed with interlocking means at their opposite ends, one of said members being provided with a series of perforations registering with the perforations in the back wall of said pocket and the other member being formed with a series of lugs adapted to be brought into register with the perforations in the pocket and in the other member, and held therein solely by friction.

4. As a new article of manufacture, a fan comprising a fan body having on one side a longitudinally extending pocket formed with a series of alined perforations in its back wall, a handle comprising two members hingedly connected together at one end, the one member arranged to be seated in said pocket and the other member having lugs adapted to be brought into re ister with the perforations in the wall of file pocket, the free ends of said handle being formed with registering shoulders and one of said members being formed with a longitudinally extending rib and the other with a longitudinally extending groove adapted to receive said longitudinally extending rib.

5. As a new article of manufacture, a fan comprising a fan body having one flat surface adapted to hear an advertisement, said body being formed with a pocket projecting backward from the rear face of said body, a handle comprising two members hinged together at one end, the one member being adapted to be seated in said pocket and the other having lugs arranged to enter and seat in the perforations in the rear wall of said pocket, and a ferrule, arranged to hear an advertisement, and adapted to he slipped over the ends of the said handle to secure the same together.
