Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 5, 1911.
Patented Dec. 10,1912.
Serial No. 636,830.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. BRYANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fayetteville, in the county of Lincoln and State of Tennessee, have invented new andl useful Improvements in Washbasins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wash basins and particularly to means provided by the said basin whereby the outlet opening of the basin may be closed or opened without necessitating the insertion within the basin of the hands of the person using the basin.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a basin with a valve or plug which shall be of an extremely simple construction, which shall be cheap to manufacture, which can be applied to any ordinary basin, and which is thoroughly eective.
With the above objects in View, and others which will appear as the nature of the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a basin provided with the improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view upon the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional view upon the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The basin 1 may be of any ordinary or desired construction, the same being centrally formed with the outlet opening 2, with which is connected the drain plate 3. The wall provided by the opening 2 is adapted to serve as a seat for the valve or plug, which will presently be set fort-h. The inner face -of the basin adjacent its outlet opening 2 is provided with a depression 4, and within this depression is secured in any desired manner a plate 5, the said plate having one of its ends, and that adjacent the opening 2, bent or rounded and cent-rally cut away to provide butts 6, and between which the rounded end 7 of the operating lever 8 is received, the butts 6 and the rounded portion 7 receiving a suitable pintle 9 to provide a hinge connection between the plate 5 and the lever 8. The basin 1 is further provided with depressions 10 and 11, the depression 10 being adapted to receive the curved body of the operating lever 8 while the depression 11 is adapted to receive the enlarged portion 12 of the lever 8. The lever, as well as its enlarged portion is formed of a single strip of flattened resilient material, and the flattened enlarged portion 12 has its perimeter preferably rounded. Secured to its enlarged portion is a plug or valve 13, the latter being constructed of any suitable compressible material such as leather, rubber o-r the like, so that the same will snugly engage t-he wall provided by the opening 2 to effectively close the said opening and to prevent the outlet of water when the device is in the position illustrated in the figures of the drawing. The body of the lever 8 has its extremity provided with a lip 14, the latter adapted tov engage with the bead 15 of the basin to effectively sustain the plug 13 upon its seat as well as to sustain the parts of the lever 8 within their depressions. It will be noted by reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings that the bead or slab 15 for the basin is provided with a depression upon both its sides and its top so that the lever 8 as well as its lip 14 is at no place arranged above the surface of the basin or of the slab, and as a consequence a free uninterrupted surface is provided. The depressions are formed within the basin so that the lever 8 as well as the plate 4 will not form an obstruction which may be contacted by the hands of the person using the basin, and thereby inflicting an injury upon the person. The lever 8 beyond this inturned lip 14 is bent outwardly as at 15, the said bent portion providing a finger hold whereby the lever may be raised so as to unseat its valve or plug 13 and to allow the water to pass out of the basin.
I-Iaving thus fully described the said invention, what I claim is In a device for the purpose set forth, a basin provided with a slab, the said basin having a water outlet opening, the basin being provided with registering depressions, a plate within one of the depressions and adapted to be arranged in a plane with the inner surface of the basin, a lever cone structed of resilient material pivotally connected with the plate and adapted to lie within the second depression and to be arranged in a plane with the inner surface of the basin, a valve carried by the lever and engaging within the outlet opening of the basin, the slab for the basin being provided With a, continuous depression registering with the last named depressionsof the basin, the outer extremity of the slab being beaded, and the lever adapted to conform With the shape of the slab and to occupy the recess provided thereby and to have its extremity formed With an offset nger hold.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 1n presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN C. BRYANT.
