To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENGLAND J. BARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morgan Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Autographic Registers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates more particularly to autographic registers, and especiallythat type of registers wherein strips of record paper are threaded through the device and have strips of manifolding material inserted transversely between the same. Heretoforo in the construction of such types of registers, little or no provision has been made to permit the registers to be used in an interchangeable manner; that is, to be faced with either end edge or with either longitudinal edge nearest the writer. As a result, heretofore the register had to be used in but one fixed position.
It is the object, therefore, of my invention to provide an autographic register with a top-plate of suflicient border area around the sides and ends of the opening through which the record paper is exposed for writing purposes, to provide suitable rests for the hand of the writer, no matter in what position, endwise or lengthwise it is presented to him.
It is also the object of my invention to provide suitable integral means on the topplate whereby the manifolding material may be journaled along one longitudinal side edge of the body or frame under such a topplate and be torn off, as needed, from the opposite longitudinal edge thereof, and to form a protection for said roll of manifolding material. This I accomplish by the means and in the manner substantially as hereinafter described and as more particularly pointed out in the claims.

On each side of the recess a the platen is preferably provided with a: narrow transverse elongated slot I, I, which are adapted to receive and have seated therein the extended L-shaped lugs 71, i, that project downwardly and outwardly from the edge of a suitable supplemental-plate or rest J of substantially rectangular shape. This supplemental rest also has a suitable recess j cut in the edge thereof alining and communicating with the recess in the edge of the platen, for the purpose of facilitating the withdrawal of the record strip when said rest is mounted in position, and the width of said supplemental rest and its shape is such that it forms an agreeable looking and a practically unbroken removable extension of said platen, as will be seen from the drawings. Suitable bearings D, D, are provided in the sideplates B, B, for the journals of the roll of paper d commonly known as the recordstrip, according to the needs of the machine. The record-strip after'leaving the roll is threaded through the machine so that it passes over the platen where it is inserted under a suitable transverse retaining-bar b, bridging over said platen from side-edge to side-edge, and then under a suitable cutterv or straightedge E, by which it is clamped. This cutter-edge E, preferably extends across the width of the register and has its ends turned 7 downwardly to form lugs that are mounted on suitable pivotal screws. A suitable handle e is provided for this cutter that projects forward from the same instead of rearwardly as formerly, and this handle has its and may be of any number desired, j
end flattened horizontally and slightly convexed, so as not to interfere with the hand when writing, and to practically elongate the width of the hand rest at this point to conform to the width of the platen. WVhen said handle is raised the record-strip retained between the cutter edge and the platen will be released. In order to keep said cutting-edge in contact with the platen, the journal-screws are, preferably, tapped into a suitable connecting-bar m that is provided with a coiled spring or other spring operated means suitable for this purpose.
' Mounted, preferably, on the left side-plate B of the register, and near each end thereof,
are a pair of springeplates or brackets f, 7, each of which are provided near their centers with stamped out journaling bosses adapted to journal the ends of a small roll of manifolding material F, that is passed transversely across the platen C in the manner shown in Fig.2 of the drawings, between the recordstrips thereon. In order to retain the record-strips fiat upon said platen, and also for the purpose of providing a suitable .hand rest for the operator on three sides of the register, I employ a suitably constructed cover-plate G, which, is, preferably, made of sheet metal stamped out in the shape indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The central portion 9 of said top-plate is cut-away to provide the usual openin through which the record-strip is exposed upon; the rear edge thereof projects almost to the rearof the register, while the forward edge fits up close to the retaining-bar The longitudinal side-portions of the cover are preferably increased in width on each side .of said opening so as to form overhanging wings, the wing on the left side thereof completely covering the roll of carbon paper, and the wing on the right side being made of practically the same dimensions.
The longitudinal edge of the right wing is,
preferably, provided with a cutting edge 9', and a series of impaling pins 9 project downward from the under surface thereof, that are adapted to pierce and retain the edge of the manifolding material and prevent the same from slipping while being cut off or torn. The central portion of the right wing is. preferably provided with a small finger opening H near its edge that is adapted to be used to withdraw the manifolding material by placing a finger on each side thereof and grasping the material through said opening and pulling the same out, the pins 9 being so short that the material will be readily disengaged therefrom.
The entire cover plate G is hinged so as to lift sidewise from the platen by lmeans of turned lugs, h,.that are pivotally secured to brackets h. projecting from the contiguous edge of the side-plate. This permits the cover-plate to "be raised either for the pur to be written ing material therethrough or otherwise.
After said manifolding material has been inserted between the record strips, it is passed to and caught upon said impaling pins, and when the cover-plate is raised will not be interfered with or pinched by the pivota'l lugs, and prevented from being grasped by the hand of the operator and drawn out. After this is done the cover-plate is lowered and locked and the end of the manifolding material which has been thus pulled beyond the edge of the cutter 9 may be torn oif. If desired the manifolding material may afterward be withdrawn and torn off without raising the cover-plate by simply grasping the same above and below the plate through the opening H, as hereinbefore described.
From the above it will be evident that ample surface is provided on all four sides of the cover-plate of the register for the operator to rest hishand and write, no matter in what position or along what side of the register he may stand, and thus make the autographic feature of this register interchangeable. 7
Suitable means may be provided to lock the cover-plate when it is lowered upon the platen, as for example a spring latch plate K may be secured to the longitudinal edge thereof, opposite its hinge, the downwardly extending spur of which engages a suitable recess made in the adjacent portion of the side-plate, substantially as shown in Fig. '5

What I claim as new is:
,1. The combination with an autographic register, having a platen that projects beyond the front end thereof and is provided with extensions, of a hand-rest consisting of an extension plate removably secured to said platen extensions.
