To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER J. REY- NOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ticket- Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a ticket case (socalled) the object of which is to prevent the defrauding of an employer by an employee, such for instance, as a conductor in the railway service; the device being adapted to hold a number of tickets of such type or character as to indicate a distance and a charge or an order and a charge, or other means of service and a predetermined charge for said service. The ticket being employed is what is known as the stub type, having a series of stations or supplies for service which is arranged accordingly, as to the trip, and also having in connection therewith amounts in cents or dollars, which would indicate the amount received by the employee, the stub being of a coinciding character with amounts and services arranged opposed to each other, such, for instance, as indicated in the drawing.

My invention consists in an improved case, or checking device comprising certain details of construction all of which will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure I, is a view looking from above showing my device with the ticket pad in position, showing the main portion of the ticket exposed to view and in posit-ion to be separated from the stub. Fig. II, is an end view looking into or through the case, showing the tickets with stubs attached, a portion of the tickets having been removed from the stubs and the stubs secured within the case. This view also illustrates certain details of construction which will be hereinafter fully set forth. Fig. III, illustrates a detailed view of the ticket and stub holder adapted both to the casing and to the reception of a number of added tickets and stubs. Fig. IV, is an end view in section of the case, illustrating the manner of locking the same, and also the manner in which the head may be attached or secured. Fig. V, is a detailed view illustrating the connect-ion of the ticket and stub holder with the case, showing the manner in which the same is attached and cooperates with the case. 'Fig. VI, illustrates the means for locking the pad toward the severing edge, thus causing the stubs to be retained in the case. Fig. VII, is a cross sectional view illustrating the detailed construction of the head and locking device.

The invention is adapted, as hereinbefore set forth, for tickets, checks or similar type of certificates which may be used on railways, in restaurants, in stores or in places of amusement, or, in other words, anywhere where it is desired to give the passenger,

purchaser, spectator or clientele a voucher of suitable character in exchange for value received or money entitling them to the equivalent of such purchase. It is also ob- .vio-us that some check should be made or retained whereby the agent or employee must return the money or its equivalent received, and whereby the amount so received can be easily audited, ascertained and entered in the proper book. With this short explanation I will proceed to describe the device, in whioh- 1, represents the case, which is formed tubular in cross section, for the purpose of strength. This tube is provided with a longitudinal opening or slot 2, the 'upper edge 3 of which forms the shear member for detaching the voucher 4 from the stub 5. Arranged in juxtaposition with the edge 3 of the case 1, are a series of notchers 6, 6, 6, of suitable number, first to designate the service, and next to designate the amount received for such service; these notchers 6, 6, 6, are made adjustable lengthwise on rod 7 to which they are attached and on which they slide. These indicators or notchers may be of any suitable form, but are provided with cutting edges lying in juxtaposition to the severing edges 3, of the case; thus when the voucher 4, is raised in order to be severed by means of the shear edge 3, the indicators having been properly adjusted, will perforate and notch in the predetermined position, both the service and the amount re ceived, indicating to the purchaser the full value of his purchase, and at the same time leaving upon the stub an indicating mark co-inciding with the voucher. Thus for instance, as indicated, the two stations: Brems and Coshen, indicate the service, and the numeral 20, indicates the amount received for such service. Thus, as the voucher is stripped from the stub, a projection is left on the stub coinciding with the voucher both relative to the service and as to the amount received.

In Fig. III, I have shown a holder adapted to receive a pad of vouchers and stubs. This holder is so formed as to receive the vouchers and stubs of any of the usual forms.

In the case 1, is mounted the holder 8, said holder 8 being formed so as to clamp the pad i and the stub 5 at the stub end. The manner of mounting the holder 8 is illustrated more clearly in Fig. V, of the drawings and consists of a slideway 9 attached to the casing 1, and lugs 8 attached to the holder 8, the lugs 8 being fitted to and slidably mounted in slots 9 in the slideways 9, thus allowing the pad holder to move inwardly and outwardly through the opening 2 in the casing 1.

Inasmuch as it is desirable that the stub portion 5 be retained and hidden within the casing 1, in such a manner that they cannot be tampered with or altered, I provide a spring 10 which rests against the rear end of the holder 8, keeping the holder and its attached stubs and vouchers projecting from the holder in approximately the position illustrated in Fig. I, so that the notched vouchers can be detached by pulling the same upwardly along the cutting edge 3 of the case 1, after which the holder is pulled inwardly against the tension of the spring 10 causing the stub 5 to pass within the easing 1 and upon the return to the normal position of the pad through the tension of spring 10 the stub 5 is raised within the casing against the inner edge of the cutting edge 3, the object being to keep the voucher close to the cutting edge 3 and to cause the stub 5 to pass within the casing 1. The manner of doing this is as follows: On the head or cap 11, which covers the open end of the case 1, I provide a pivoted lever pivoted as at 12 to the cap; this lever is provided with a long arm 13 which in turn is provided with a pin 13 extending inwardly in such a manner (see Fig. II) as to engage the under edge of the holder 8 just within the casing 1. The short arm 14, of this lever is spring pressed through the medium of a pawl 15 and a spring 16 causing the long arm 13 of the lever to follow up the holder and also locking the holder after it has been raised with its attached vouchers and stubs through the pawl 15 engaging teeth 17 of the lever thus preventing any tampering with the stubs and causes the stubs, when the vouchers are severed from them and the pad is retracted, to engage the inner edge of the casing 1 opposite the severing edge 3.

The manner of securing the cap or cover 11 to the casing after the pad has been placed in the holder 8 is by means of interlocking slots 18, (see Figs. IV and VII) formed'on the cap or cover flange and pins 19 formed or secured to the open end of the case 1 thus the cap or cover 11 is placed on the open end of the casing after the pad has been inserted in the holder and by slightly turning the same the slots 18 are caused to engage with, the pins 19 thus locking the cap or cover in place. In order to fully secure this cap or cover against being opened by the agent or employee the same is sealed as suggested in Figs. I and IV, preferably by passing a wire 20 through coinciding holes formed in the open end of the casing 1 and the periphery of the cap or cover 11 and sealing the ends of the wire by any seal such as 21, this being considered a more secure method than a lock of ordinary construction inasmuch as the seal may be formed in any predetermined manner and any predetermined design and may be altered daily.

Having set forth this invention in its details and assemblage as I consider it best adapted at the present time for the above stated uses I have shown and described it accordingly but do not hence wish to be limited to the exact construction as the same may be altered without departing from this invention.

IVhat I claim is:

1.. In a device of the character described, the combination of a casing embodying a pad holding device arranged to receive a pad so as to conceal one portion and expose the other, means for operating said pad holding device so as to draw the pad within the casing for a short distance and means for feeding said pad holder and its pad upwardly substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a casing embodying a pad holding device arranged to receive a pad so as to conceal one portion and expose the other, means for operating said pad holding device so as to draw the pad within the casing for a short distance and means for feeding said pad holder and its pad upwardly, said means being provided with a ratchet blocking device substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. A device of the character described, comprising a slotted cylindrical casing, the upper edge of said slot forming a shearing member, a compressible pad holding device operating in said casing in such a manner as to retain one portion of a severed sheet within the casing with means for feeding the pad holder and its contained pad of sheets against the severing edge and locking said pad holder as it is fed to the shearing edge.

4:- A device of the character described,

comprising a slotted cylindrical casing, a

pad holder slidably mounted in said casing, said pad holder provided with hooks adapted to fit and slide in the slotted plates mounted on the inner surface of the casing substantially as set forth.

5. A device of the character described, comprising a slotted cylindrical casing, a pad holder slidably mounted in said casing, said pad holder provided with hooks adapted to fit and slide in the slotted plates mounted on the inner surface of the casing in combination with a spring adapted to press the holder in a protruded position relative to the casing.

6. A device of the type set forth comprising a cylindrical casing, a pad holder mounted in said casing, a detachable head secured to one end of said casing, a lever pivotally attached to the inner surface of said head, said lever being provided on one end with an extension at right angle to the lever and the other end of said lever being provided with a series of notches, in combination with a pawl adapted to engage said notches, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

7. A device of the class described, comprising a casing, a pad holder slidably mounted in said casing, said holder consisting of a single sheet of metal bent upon itself so as to form a recess into which fits the bound edge of a pad, the opposite end of said holder being provided with a downwardly projecting flange, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

8. A device of the class described, comprising a casing, a pad holder slidably mounted in said casing, said pad holder consisting of a single sheet of metal bent upon itself so as to form a recess into which fits the bound edge of a pad, a series of hooks depending from the under surface of said holder, said hooks adapted to fit into a corresponding series of slots in said casing, and a downwardly projecting flange provided at the outer edge of said holder, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

9. A device of the type set forth comprising a cylindrical casing, a pad holder slidably mounted in said casing, a spring at tached to the inner surface of said casing and adapted to press against the pad holder, a series of plates mounted on the inner surface of said casing, said plates being provided with longitudinal orifices for the reception of hinge hooks mounted on the under surface of the pad holder, a pawl and ratchet lever mounted on the inner surface of the removable head of the casing adapted to press and secure the pad and holder against the upper edge of the slotted portion of said casing.
