orn ca'n.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH A. WAKEFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento, State. of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of thesame, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates? to improvements in oil cans and particularly to an improvementor addition to the spout of the oil can whereby the same will not leak or drop any oil until it is absolutely desired that it shall do so. In other words, the can may be tipped over or held in an inverted position but no oil will pass therefrom until the same is positioned at a point where it is desired to place the oil and then the can is operated in the usual manner as other cans now commonly in use and thereupon the oil will pass from the can and immediately upon a discontinuance of the pressing of the bottom of the can the oil supply is automatically shut off.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly eflective for the'purposes for which it is designed.
These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
The figure of the drawing shows the sectional view of an oil can with my uuproved structure therein. 7
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings the numeral 1 designates an oil can showing the usual flexible bottom 2 and the usual threaded top 3 to receive the spout 4.
In providing my impr'oved invention I dispose a small plate or band 5 across the Specification of Letters iatent.

6 then projects through the plate 5 and is provided with a threaded end 9 on which is mounted a threaded sleeve 10 having a projecting flange 11 at its upper end.
A spring 12 is interposed between the flange l1 and the member 5, thatension of which spring normally holds the cross-head 7 closed against the chamfer'8. This structure will therefore, keep the oil can closed until it is desired to havepil pass therefrom and then the bottom tube is pressed in the usual manner which will press against the sleeve 10 and force the rod 6 and cross-head 7 outward. This action will open the end of the spout a permitting the oil to pass therefrom. When pressure is taken off of the bottom tube the spring 12 will then again force the member 7 into closed position. By means of the threaded sleeve 10 the length of the rod 6 may be changed in order that the same will always fit with the proper adjustment against the bottom tube in order to insure perfect operation.
a From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced'such a device as substantially fulfils the object of the invention as set forth herein. 4 1
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred constructionof the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A device of the character described comprising anoil can having a spout, a plate disposed across-the bottom of said spout, a vertical pin projecting through said can and said spout, a crosshead on the upper end of said pin, said spout being provided with a chamfer at its upper end to receive said In testimony whereof I aflix my signature clrlossleaid; said rod beirlig proviied withda in presence of two witnesses. v
t rea e portion on its ower en ,a threaed, sleeve mounted on said threaded portion, RALPH TAKEFIELD' a projecting flange on said sleeve, and a Witnesses: spring interposed between said flange and H. W. BAKER, said plate, as described. R. E. GREEN.
