Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 104.640, dated June 21, 1870.
'o aZZwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON IINovnn, of the city, county, and State4 of New York, have invented a new and Improved GhaiirLock; and
` `I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, which i will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the Yaccompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. i Myinvcntion relates to a new article of manufacture for attaching watch chains or guards `toivesta to be supplied to and sold' by jewel- Vers; and it consists in vthe device `hereinafter to ordinary padlockfcascsand it has a staple or eye, B, at the bottom, for the connection of the chain C. p The hasp D is provided with a hook, E, on the end, and projects into a sliding 'tubular catch, F, to be locked, passing through the lock-case G, and a fixed tube, H, which the catch-tube slides in,'and which holds the spring I, that drives the catch-tube outward and holds it in the positionto lock the hasp.
The tubeH extends through the lock-case 4from side to side, and is closed at one side by the cap K, soldered onto the case, and to the end of it, to secure itand the spring at the other end, it receives the sliding catchtube F, which is slotted at L for the reception of the stud-pin M, fixed in the tube H below, to
prevent the spring from pushing it out. The said catclrtube is also provided with a thumbbit, N, to'be used in pushing it in to release the hasp. The bevel-hook pushes the catch back when kthe hasp is forced home.
This arrangement is very simple, and may be cheaply construct-ed; After the case has been made and the round holes bored or otherwise formed for the tube H, the Asliding catchtube is first put into tube H- and secured by the stud-pin M. Then the spring is put in, and the tube is putin place by sliding it in through 011e of theholes in the case. Then the cap K is put on, securing the tube in its place and confining `the spring.
The com act arr. nenientI of the tubes and v other operative devices in the upper portion of the case A leaves a vacant space in the lower part of the same, which may be utilized as a' receptacle for a photograph or other picture, and thus answer the purpose ot' a locket.
I am well aware that the devices employed in my invention are not new, per se, and also that asliding threeepronged spring-plate and a hook are shown in the patent of S. Bogcrt, No. 41,191, January l, 186i. I therefore desire to disclaim said patent, as my invention pertains to a new article of manufacture, superior in point of simplicity, mode of construction, facility of operation, and zulapta-f tion ytc its special use, and which is at the same time highly ornamental.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Iatent- The new and improved article of manutac# ture herein described, consisting` of the part lock-ease A, provided with thechain-eye Il, stationary outer tube, H, having cap l, and containing the spiral spring I, the tube F', provided with'the cap N, and slotted on one side toreceive the hook E of the hasp I) and on the other' to receive the stud-pin M, all constructed and arranged as and for the purpose described. p
` The above specification of my invention signed by me this 26th day of May, 1.870.
e SIMON IINOVER.
