To all Iwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BALKEMA, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Fayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg-Testers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in egg testers, and has for its leading object the provision of a novel and improved device of this character embodying impro-ved means for regulating the amount of heat within the shade of the flame providing the light for testing the eggs and also embodying means for preventing over-heating of the fuel supply for the flame.
The further object of my invention is the provision of an improved egg tester having the flame or light shield so constructed as to throw rays of light toward the table or support for the device to light up said support while preventing any rays of light other than those from the testing apertures striking and confusing the person testing the eggs.
Other objects and advantages of my improved egg tester will be readily apparent by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will be understood that I may make modifications in the specific struc ture shown and described within the scope of the appended claim without departing from or exceeding the spirit of my invention.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my complete egg tester. Fig. 2 represents a view taken at right angles to Fig. 1 and illustrating the use of the device. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and, Fig. 5 represents a cross-sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 represents a view of the egg tester in its folded position.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the base of the lamp o-f my improv-ed egg tester, said base having rising therefrom the annular flange or wall 2 having secured thereto near its upper edge the top 3 ofthe lamp. It will be observed by reference to the sectional views that the annulus projects upward above the top 3 to provide a pany on top of the closed fuel tank to contain water to prevent over-heating of the fuel supply from the combustion at the wick 4.
Vcommon source of light In the form of my invention illustrated I K have shown rising from the top 3 the neck 5 to receive the burner 6 which bears the wick for use with kerosene as a fuel, but it will be understood that I may employ any for illuminating the interior of my tester. Fitting onto the burner 6 is the ordinary chimney engaging ring 7 while tting between the engaging ngers of said ring is the annulus 8 depending from the base disk or ring 9 of the tester. Said ring 9 has rising therefrom the main tubularsection 10 of the device which terminates in the nishing rim or bead 11. Extending upward from the said tubular section 10 is the frustoconical shaped chimney portion 12 which has a depending slightly reduced portion 13 adapted to fit within the tubular section when the shoulder 14 is resting on the bead 11, the shoulder limiting the downward movement of the chimney section while the depending portion 13 connects the two sections when it is desired to use the tester. When it is not desired to use the same, however, it is merely necessary to separate the two sections and invert the upper section when it will fit into the tubular section and the device will then be in compact shape for putting away or shipping, as is shown in Fig. 6.
To enable either one or two persons to use my tester at the same time, I form on opposite sides thereof the outwardly projecting o-r radiating collars 15 of size to receive and tightly engage the end of an egg so that no light can escape around the egg but must pass therethrough and thus disclose the condition of the egg being tested.
In order that the tester may also serve to distribute a certain amount of light in the room in which it is being used to obviate the necessity for other lamps or lights, and at the same time to prevent said light from shining into the eyes of the tester, I form in the tube near lthe base and intermediate the test-ing collars the apertures 16 having extending outward therefrom the shields or deflectors which cause the light from said orifices to be projected against the table or support on which the device is disposed but prevent the light from shining upward or outward.
To protect the flame of the wick from sudden gusts which would otherwise cause the same to flicker and smoke, I line the interior of the basal portion of thertubular section l0 with a sheet 17 ofrisinglass or like transparent material, while to enable me to some extent to control the draft upward through the conoidal chimney I pivot to the upper end thereof the cowl or damper member 18 which maybe swung to permit of direct upward draft or'swung over the chimney to retard the flow of air and gases upward therethrough. i
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the construction and use of my improved egg tester will be readily apparent and it will be seen that I have provided a device of this character which is of simple and durable construction, which will provide suliicient light to worl by in a dark room without confusinP the person testing the eggs, and vwliichwil commend itself to all as vextremely desirable and elicient in everyv particular.
